NY chicken lover!!!!

Yeah, a lot of different breeds that have whites are 'sports' lucky offspring of the original bred to stay white. Not the case with RIwhites, actualy a different breed, I think it is the same with the different colors of chanteclers also right? Even the different colors of leghorns I think came from mix breeding.
I think I had production RIReds they laid a gazzillion eggs! Even right through winter. If it wasn't for a chance visit on the BYC's site as a lurker I probably would have gotten them again. Who would've thought there was so many awesome breeds of chickens out there? I want like thirty different breeds! But back down to earth, I think I can handle four or five seperate breeds.

I have a mixed flock. Chose them primarily for egg laying, weather hardiness & temperament. I haven't been disappointed with any, although the Dominique lays smaller eggs. The Dels, RIRs', Wellies have done well. My most recent additions were Barnvelders & SLWs' - both of which have lived up to my expectations. The Marans have done ok, but I would not buy them, due to disappointing egg color/production. This year I will be getting more Barnies, SLWs' & Wellies. Planning ahead - next year will be RIR & Dels, since the ladies are getting past their prime. Of course, it's always hard to resist the temptation of new breeds like Legbars or Millies....................

I plan on hatching out my wellie eggs, going to keep them going. I'm going to add a couple EEgrs and brown leghorns (going for rose comb ones next time) every couple years, not going to breed them just want a variation in egg color. This spring I hope to add white giants, black and blue langshans and cemani (crosses). I will be breeding these for meat birds, and will only be keeping for breeders the largest of the langshans and white giants. Would like to eventually perfect the white giants to their standard and have breeder quality for sale, it doesn't seem like there are any breeders of SOP white giants out there, only for the blacks.
Putting lots of big chickens in the freezer while I'm on my quest will be good too.

Aw,shucks, it isn't like I really want to, just don't think there is any realistic way to keep a large number of roos free ranging with the main flock without causing problems.

well i was surprised to see this in the nest ..a well egg with blue spots ..i've seen them mostly with a red or marroon colored spots ..i started using a diffrent grit ..its a red granit i think its call ..i no the other stuff i used was white chick grit and a grey chicken grit ..i am wondering if anyone else has seen this and would the diffrent grit cause this ..its the only thing i've change except adding more eggs and and higher protein..oh i started to cook the egg shells i give for extra calcium and i leave it in bigger pieces , were i used to give them raw and run threw the bullet to powder them ..these pics dont do the colors any justice...but i think it shows what i mean ..

beer can conmgrats on the eggs starting..thought maybe you had some free loaders on your hands ..lol

my great uncle used to raise nothing but capouns ..i have an old picture of him with his flock ..he raised them in celoron ..he had a huge flock too ..mom always said they were the best chickens she ever ate ..i'll try and take a pic of the pic and post it ..its on real old photo card ..so it may not show up ..anyways i thought i'd throw that out there ..

Pretty Nice Size for a new egg ..it may be a double ..
Thats what I love about those young hens ...no light needed ...she is ready to lay ..

I always thought it was after their first molt that they started laying larger eggs? At least that was the case for my RIReds. If my brown leghorns keep laying these I'm going to have to find some super jumbo cartons Lol! The EEgr egg in the top left has spots, I'm thinking maybe I have another one laying. I've been just getting a green one and a olive, both clean no spots.

Well now you do what you must.

Production birds are just fine if that's what folks prefer. Everyone has their method and reasons. I try to respect that.

Some folks can't afford to run an old chickens home.

I choose to believe we all do the best we can.

Could your hen have ate a blue crayon? Lol! Pretty neat!

this is the same pic ..i wasnt sure which one was going to show up best ..it looks like a mixed flock..this is my great uncle chalie and his flock ..this pic is from the 30's ..it was taken in celoron ..he used to order all his birds from the speagle catalog and the sears and robucks catalog...altho i have heard there was a few he got from the fairs and won a few playing cards ..mom said he loved his birds but back then they were for food and eggs only ..i think if you click on the pics , you can blow them up bigger to get a better look..
