NY chicken lover!!!!

I need to go to CNY SNAP sometime and pick up some barn kitties for my parent's dairy farm. We've always had drop offs and new litters, but not in the past few years. The last cat standing, known as blind kitty, was a blind barn cat. Didn't catch much, but occasionally got a mouse. The mices are becoming ratses.

How do the barn cats do around the chickens???

I don't have any around here. It varies, depends on the cat. A neighbor's cats occasionally come around. One doesn't bother, just slinks around on the way to the field. Another likes to stalk the chickens, dislike that one.

Now my cat is by no means a barn cat...Mater of fact he is an old man house cat...but...When I first got my chickens and let them free range. My cat would just sit back and watch. He took a real interest in my little d'Uccle. He never went after them just watch them while I watched him to make sure that he wasn't looking for a tasty chicken dinner. My cat will walk through them and not touch them. One day while I was out there my cat was walking through the yard not paying attention and got a little close to a bunch of the girls taking a dust bath. My rooster didn't like that Chewy (my cat) was so close so he chased poor Chewy to the barn. I think ever since then Chewy keeps his distance even acting a little scared of them. It really freaks him out when he wants to go outside and I open the door only to see a bunch of chickens at the door. The cat turns and runs back into the house...

Granted it all depends on the cat and how the chickens are. We had a stray cat that I didn't want to find out how he was going to be so he found his self a new home. As for my cat, I'm not worried about him with the big chickens..Chicks on the other hand peek his interest. He would sit on the rock wall next to the run licking his lips watching the chicks with their broody momma. I have no doubt that given the chance he would snag one of them...But the funny thing is that in the house he doesn't show much interest in the chicks when I have some in the brooders.

Sitting at my desk editing a mystery thriller novel for a new author - - snowed in -- red wine and all the chores done.

MAN what a great day !!!!

Morning all. Getting some much needed snow here (typed sarcasticly). Will have to go out in a bit and snowblow and shovel. Suppose to get windchills down to -20 tonight. We have lived here 19 years and yesterday morning is the first time ever I found fox tracks in the snow in our yard. Have never seen fox around here because of all the dogs and coyotes around. It cruised all around the coops and back yard. I think it may have been looking for the rabbit or mice/voles and there have been quite a few tracks in the snow from them as well. I was a bit nervous about last night as I had to work till 7 and no one was home to lock them up. Fortunately everyone was safe and there were no more tracks around so perhaps it moved on. I will be vigilante however as everything is hungry now and looking for an easy meal. My silkie coops/runs are pretty secure with hardwear mesh but the terrorist coop has an open top run and the pop door is open to the coop. I see the rabbit was around last night or early this morning as its tracks were just lightly dusted when I went out to release the beasts.

Picked up some cabbage and kale for the cheeps to give them something different for a change. Got a couple of old apples to throw in the bucket as well and a couple cans of unsalted green beans. The terrorists are all about the greens. Silkies not so much.

I hate to see animals dumped. Dh had a lab show up at the sportsmans club while he was there. It was just before the "blizzard" was supposed to hit. She was hungry and thin but didnt seem to have been out too long. He tried to get her in the car to come home but no go. An aquaintance of mine picked her up. Turns out a beagle showed up the same evening at another sports club a couple miles away. I wish we could treat the owners the same way they treat their animals. Dump them off somewhere to fend for themselves or chain them up outside with no food and water, etc. Let the punishment fit the crime. Okay, rant done.

My Yaktraks came two days ago so I will try them out today while Im outside. My driveway is a sheet of ice under the snow as is my yard so I hope they work well. Going to order some snow boots since I dont have any.

Time to get busy being domestic. Ta for now.

But we keep the chicken population down by Selling the Eggs

Folks are like this all the time. I always say they think everyone is like THEM! That's why they don't trust folks. I give folks the benefit of the doubt. Besides they're there to help the animals not the people. Screw the people, take the animals. If folks WILL lie do you really want them having the animals? Some of these shelter people haven't got a lick a sense.

What ticks me off, is then they let folks adopt cats or dogs WITHOUT a guarantee they'll be spayed. I say connect the shelter to the vets office who will do the surgery and if they don't show up to have them fixed go to their house and take the animal back.

You've got to understand sure it will be hard in the beginning, but as time goes by cats and dogs will be come scarce and folks will pay if they really want one.

I have 2 house cats that are inside/outside. They frequently wander in & out of the hen house looking for rodents. They are respectful of the chickens, however, I wouldn't trust them with chicks. My big grey cat likes to sit on top of the brooder and watch the baby peeps.....KFC - Kitty Fancies Chicken
