Never wormed mine either, don't understand te 'hype' on it, dad never did and his chickens were just fine for a life time....

Maybe because his chickens ate everything and something that they did eat worked.

Too much about worms and disease and all that. I wonder if what folks are doing or giving is causing more harm than good.

Some junk can shut down their kidneys if you over do it.

I hate to enter the worm thing again but I say if it ain't broke don't fix it. Don't mess with success.

I will ask this, why do my chickens peck at the paint on the coop? Is it boredom? They're in a run so not running around the yard.

What color is your paint? The monsters known as "my girls" will eat, or at least attempt to eat, anything red. They are strange little girls for sure. Today I got bombarded because I wore a red shirt out to feed. Oops my bad I guess.

Well, we are in the antibiotic culture... I am all for natural foods etc...

Mine peck at paint too. That's why my nails are always natural. They pluck the crapt out of painted toe nails...lol

Yay the kids and the chickens are all outside today. Muddy but getting rid of the "stupid rain " syndrome quickly. My WL look a little like BL right now but that will pass. I'm so excited . We get to have salad out of the garden today. We have spinach, lettuce , white cherry tomatoes , carrots radishes.

I see sun! I'm looking forward to a dry productive day. I wish you all the same. This chicken addiction is real. I saw an ad for 14 chickens (one roo rest hens) for $100 and I tried to think of how to fit them in my coops. LOL. I don't need them and my husband doesn't want me to spend any money on chickens when we have a source for free chicks when there is a good hatch at my in-laws.

Edited to add: the ad is gone. I seriously have to prepare my coop for more. My goal is at least 5 laying hens, but my main coop has room for 10 laying hens. I have 3 pullets so far (I think- they're only 3 months old). I have a separate brooder area (holding 4 chicks right now) and another small summer coop (planning to separate 3 of the 4 3-mo-old boys soon). So, in the end I'll probably need how many more? Chicken math is hard.

Also, my source is all the same stock. Is there value in diversity? Should I try to go to a swap? Do you know of any?

If you are planning to breed, diversity is a necessity! If you simply want eggs it doesn't matter. I'm busy researching breeding/genetics right now, so I'm not sure at what point inbreeding becomes problematic - I'm sure someone else here is better equipped with that knowledge! Chicken Math (aka Morehens disease) is terminal - there is no known cure!

Last night when I went to put chickens away the broody who did such an epic job with that staggered hatch was out with the rest of the flock. She scooted right in with the others for snacks, as I watched her chicks go up into their cooplet and call her. She was not pleased when I plucked her up and set her in that area. They seem to do okay during the day, but I think they would get really cold at night if she goes back to the flock. And I think that's the way she is headed cause there was an egg in their cuddle box. Maybe I should take down their fence and see which way this moves. Maybe they will just follow her into the main coop. I will make them a safe place to go to if they need.

My broody hatched 11 eggs for me on May 27th. She has been laying for a week now and is trying to cut the apron strings with her chicks. The past 2 nights she's been sleeping on the roost. Some of the chicks roost next to & under her !. Last night was the 1 st night that some of them slept alone.

SandHill chicks here this morning. 12 white jersey giants, four don't look like wjg? Was told I wasn't getting any langshans, paperwork said I had four, made me happy until I counted them, only one and only 22 chicks not 25, someone doesn't know how to count, and I bet I get charged for four. What am I going to do with one langshan? For 'packing peanuts' I got free, 9 red sussex, haven't decided if I'm keeping them yet.

All alive and healthy and very active, especially the sussex. The langshan is big! Better pics tomorrow. I'm leaving them alone today to eat, drink, poop, and chill out.
