NY chicken lover!!!!

Gorgeous picture Purpletie! Also, sounds like my chickens are the odd ones out on banana peels. They just will NOT eat them. I'll have to tell them everyone else's chickens say they're being silly.

My chickens LOVE bananas! But I haven't tried giving them the peels :0. They might b a little spoiled :D Grapes & apples go over well but they looked at me like I had 3 heads when I threw pieces of pumpkin into their runs. Perhaps I should have cooked it. Freezer burnt raviolies were a big hit. Seems like they really appreciate variety

It has been so nice to have a day without any rain! Everything is so wet. With any luck we will be moving the duck House to a new area this weekend, but it may not end up till next weekend. Today was the first time in a while that they were out free ranging. We are hoping that the fox has moved on. All attempts to catch it in the traps and snares have come up empty. I had a friend come with his heavy artillery!

Made some good progress with the Hoop Coop for the turkeys today. My hands are all tore up pretty good from the wire mesh, but it is coming along nice. We are painting all bare wood with the same barn stain that I have on the chicken coop. I say we...it should really be me. DH has been pretty hands off on this project. He helped get the wood home and adds his 2 cents, but that has been about it. With any luck we will have the hoop up by tomorrow afternoon. I'm trying to get it done while he is home cause I'm sure that I will need his help with it, but if push came to shove I'm sure that I would be able to figure something out...We have a come-a-long that I'm sure I could rig up to help pull the sides in when I'm ready.

Painting all the wood with red barn stain in hopes to make it last longer. Had to do it in a few batches. It took forever to dry with all the humidity. Darn rain

My little supervisors...My 2 Reds...Red and Scarlet, and my broody momma Jessie (black) If you look closely you can see her baby duck in front of her. They like to hang out with me in the garage.

The 3 panels laid out on the yard. Still have to finish the mesh over the center, but making good progress.

Last night when I went to put chickens away the broody who did such an epic job with that staggered hatch was out with the rest of the flock. She scooted right in with the others for snacks, as I watched her chicks go up into their cooplet and call her. She was not pleased when I plucked her up and set her in that area. They seem to do okay during the day, but I think they would get really cold at night if she goes back to the flock.
Can you put a snack in with the babies too ?
How old are these chicks?
my broody released her chicks last week - they were 7 weeks . Old enough to be fine

Morning all. Another beautiful day. Cheeps were pounding on the doors to get out this am. Got to hold one of the barred rock cross monsters. Still needs a little more weight on before processing. Have to put the brooder silkies out in the playpen today. They are outgrowing their brooder so it's time to get them ready for the coop. Have to rig a barrier so little big man and splash Caan look but not touch. The 3 silkie chick's with 4 mommies are doing very well. With 4 moms making sure they eat and drink and dust bath and keeping them warm, their dad just chills in a quiet space!!!

Off to do errands this am and deliver eggs. Have a good day!

Little puffy cheeks. Final count is 7 chicks from broody - 2 Welsummer and 5 EE. Tossed the last 2 Welsummer eggs last night. Hopefully she will get up and about more without the eggs. I give more chick feed and push her out of the Eglu late afternoon so I know they are all fed before getting locked in at night. Will let the chicks grow a bit more before I open up the Eglu cage to mingle with the flock.

Be sure to post more pictures.

I'd like to put this out there. I need to move my half hoops, but can't figure out to do it. Any ideas?

This one I'd like to move back a few feet. Even two would help, more would be ideal. I know it may hurt my back but I've got to do it. I'd hate to have to take it appart. It's right in front of the rain "stream" so water runs right across the front and it's wet and muddy.

Awww! I love puffy cheeks!

Moving stuff around in the freezer so I can get more ice in before little girls party tonight. Came across a couple bags of freezer burnt veggies that I'll toss to the chickens. Also have this fully cooked processed ham log stuff that my mom gave us a couple years back. We ate one and didn't like it. It is 640 mg sodium per 2oz serving, way too salty for us in addition to tasting weird. Would something this salty be ok for the chickens? I have 2, would only give them one at a time. Or should I just garbage it?

Chickens would probably enjoy it, although my old rooster will be forever famous for eating all the "fingers" off a giant coosh ball

Is DH not marking your territory? I have stapled some old jeans to a couple of trees and give them a good soak. Laugh if you must but while it's not the only deterrent it can't hurt.

I'm working on my "hedgerows" too. Yesterday I picked a few black berries from the beginning of my work.

Here's a pics of a hedgerow. Not mine but a patterns to follow. I'll be adding gates of course and I've ran poultry wire for plants to grow through making it harder for a fox to get through. By planting pricker or thorny shrubs in to it will add another layer of defense. You can let them grow as high or trim them as short as you'd like. Make them narrow or wide. I have some wild roses that bloom in spring and while not all that pleasing should help. The root very easily and are an invasive pain but with proper care can be kept in check. The have companies in the UK that will build these for folks and that also give lessons on how to do it yourself. They also have competitions, and designated styles of designs. Used to keep livestock in and predators out. Much prettier than fencing I think.
