NY chicken lover!!!!

Just checking in...All of the feather friends are doing well. Thankful that we live on a back road and everyone tends to slow down as the drive past. The silly chickens can't seem to stay on our side of the road.

Found out that my roosters start crowing at about 3:45AM!! We can't hear them from the bedrooms and last night I slept out in a tent with my kids and I was woken up when they started crowing. They would quiet down then a little while later they would start up again. Needless to say I didn't sleep well...that and my kids were a little scared and both snuggled me so tight it was a little on the uncomfortable side. I loved every minute of it!

Getting ready for the fair. Will be cooking breakfast every morning so if you come to the fair before 11 come visit me at the "Ox Roast" food building at the corner of the poultry building and the coliseum. I cook more pancakes and french toast during the run of the fair then probably what we all eat over a year. I got asked if I wanted to do the eggs this year, but passed. First I like cooking the pancakes and second I can't make over easy without breaking the yolks. Last year I filled in during my Mom's potty break (she usually does the eggs) and I think I broke 5 eggs in a row..I'll stick to the pancakes..that and I get to be next to the window and it is cooler there

I also got asked to be one of the judges for the 4H poultry show. They won't have live birds, just pictures I'm being told. I won't actually be judging any birds, just the kids..But it is an honor to be able to do that..So I will get a break Friday from pancakes to do that.

I just got back from the dutchess county fair....great time but no chickens. Everyone wants to keep the bird flu far away from us! I missed the birds, but am glad to keep all of mine safe!

Well it looks like my silkies are cockerels! I posted on the What breed or gender is this? forum. I haven't heard crowing yet, they are only about 5 to 6 months old. So, not sure what to do from here. They are sweet boys. Also they seem VERY bonded and are never far apart.

No Comparison here I only have one ...so this one baby is probably a barred... male ?
With the barred chicks I've had, the head spot didn't tell me anything. The ladies wings feathered mostly black with white bars and the males feathered dark gray/light gray bars.
Boy. Very gray.

Girl. Follow up pic recently. More black.

I sympathize with you. I gave away 4 (which my friend believes is at least 3 pullets) and sold 6 (which I believe were at least 3 pullets) of my 25 chicks. Of the 15 I have left, I believe 9 or more are cockerels.

But I do have many adorable chicks including this barnyard mix that was the first to hatch and was named Scout. Here he/she is:

Just a little update - after all my concerns about her strange behavior I am pleased to let everyone know that Sylvia our Brown Leghorn seems to be back to normal. I added extra grit as Rancher suggested, and we have not had any more of those horribly humid days - or small children running round the garden.

Yesterday she approached and ate scratch from my hand, something she used to do every evening, but she had been unwilling to come close to me for about 2 weeks. I have not seen any more of the zoning out, standing and staring behavior, and she seems to be continuing to molt again - found 1 long wing feather, and about 5 others small feathers in the coop this morning.

I thought I'd got a good new photo of her, but seems I had a focus issue - the bungee cord is extremely clear and she is the brown blur in the background!

At the weekend we let the little chicks out to free range for the first time, while the big chickens were already out. I was a little anxious, as our normally placid Plymouth Rock Pearl has been watching them closely, pacing the fenceline and trying to peck them through the chicken wire, but they've been in neighboring pens for over a month now, and things went more smoothly than expected, she ignored them for a short time, then came marching over, gave them both a short sharp peck which sent them flapping away, and seemed satisfied that they understood she was in charge. After that they stayed in their 2 'pairs' but roamed fairly close to each other, before going back to their separate pens.

Our Wyandotte Fern is 13 weeks now, and Honey our Partridge Rock is 12 weeks old

Thanks all for the advice when I was panicking!
