NY chicken lover!!!!

Meanwhile, the remaining hens & pullets seem to breath a huge sigh of relief when the rooster/cockerel population is reduced.
Poor girls! I'd imagine having that many is stressful. lol

Not much going on here but I have to say we are really coming along on our coop. We finished the door to the run and will put it up tomorrow. I was absolutely delighted to see it! It is starting to feel like "DowntHEN Abbey". Hahaha We'll try to finish up the bottom half of the hardware wire, then the door from the house to the run.

Rancher, How long is that runnings sale on for? I noticed a few things. Shavings were 5.99, Straw was 5.99 and I saw the horse pellets for 5.99 a bag too. I was like a kid in a candy shop! I didn't buy any because I'm still wondering what to put in the coop and run. I'm afraid to make the wrong move. Hahaha

I DID find a GMO free pellet feed at runnings. It was a small back for 14.99 and they will get the bigger bags in that will be 36.00. My husband just about pooped his pants!

I'm REALLY a stickler about GMO feed. I just don't want to feed the chickens something that is dangerous for consumption that we will put in our mouths. Obviously it won't kill you immediately but over time GMO will mess with your body. I'm not willing to risk my daughters reproductive hormones. I have PCOS and I'm convinced that part of it is the added hormones we get to make our produce look bigger and last longer. I've had fertility issues and it took us 10years and one traumatic preterm loss to have our little girl. I'm sure it's not all because of GMO but I know it's played some kind of factor. Anyhoo, my husband is fine with regular feed and I'm wanted GMO free. Plus I'm looking for whole corn, not the cracked corn. However, the whole corn I'm looking for I'd like it to be...you guessed it, GMO free. So where I can I get it? Runnings and most of the other feed stores don't carry gmo free. My guess is to get what I want, it's going to cost a whole lot. My husband, like most folks, won't be up for spending that kind of money.

SO, what are you all using? I went to an agway store and saw an Omega 3 and Flax pellet egg layer food. It looks good but really all these bags tell you are the vitamins in it. Where is there any listings of what your actually giving your hens? I saw a video a few weeks ago and it has really inspired me on what to feed the girls so they get the nutrients but also do well for the season they are in. Has anyone seen THIS video?

I think that there is so much more research to be done on our food and the way our health as a nation is headed...it won't be done. Too much money in Pharmaceuticals, industrial growing (Monsanto etc)... to let that happen. Sure you can heal diabetes...here's your apple...take one each day.

I have two houses that lay my food eggs. I like to keep them fed as much organic as possible. But, as many chickens as I keep I am going broke so I started growing them food. So, it's greens, apples, pears, watermelon, zucchini, dandelion greens, sunflower seeds etc....When Jason pulls weeds he throws the pile in the run and it is devoured. At one point I realized then love maple leaves...no clue! Anyhow, you can find food that your chickens will love that is healthy for them that doesn't come from a bag.

The organic feed at TSC is 40lbs for $24.99. (and pine shavings for $5.50) But, like this video gal said you can make your own. I buy a 50 lb bag of oats from Troyers and it lasts forever and the girls love oatmeal. Whatever you choose to do...is up to you. I am a firm believer that you are what you eat EATS...then you will know your path.

On the run part. In an ideal world I would have everything on wheels so I could move it each week. Some runs are on mulch. I have a friend who drops a truck full of mulched up tree. I dry it out and use it for the run. I get a few months from it and then muck it out and put new mulch in. So splinter problems and the hens seem pleased.

I saw in Wegman's a dozen organic eggs for $7.99. That may be where we are headed for healthy food.

Gramma-
Sorry about your chickens...You have had many losses this summer haven't you? Everything loves a chicken! I have never been to Kings Auction...I would be curious though.

I feed Nutrena NatureWise. It's not GMO free, and when it comes to corn it is very difficult to find truly GMO free. Let us know what you find. My goal is to eventually grow more chicken food. I think if you search enough farmer's markets you'll find someone who has non-GMO ideas. I recommend Craigslist for rooster advertising. Pairing a roo with a pullet got me three inquiries eventually. Renew and update the listing so it jumps to the top of the category.

Can't remember where you live, but there is an organic feed store near Clyde. If you're interested I'll try and find the name.

I'm halfway through incubating my pullets' first eggs. I have 8 left that look okay. My guess is I'll get 3 or 4 chicks to hatch. I'm hoping to get myself a better incubator this winter.

As I said, Craigslist worked for me. I'm still thinking of taking a couple pairs to Cobleskill for the ENYS Poultry Association Fall Show. The fee for selling there is $10. I'll probably just list the pairs on craigslist though. I've never been to Kings Auction, but I should check it out since it's so close to me.

As for coop and run litter, I use a combination of free clean leaves and sticks, pine shavings from TSC, and sawdust and shavings from my husband's woodworking projects. My run isn't enclosed anymore. The chickens ate everything possible inside the run, so now they wander the whole yard. We have 2 acres and they generally stay close.

I hope everyone has a great weekend with no predators.

The sale ends Sunday the 20th. I'm sure you can find it on line.

As for GMO's I advice folks to eat as healthy as they can afford to.

I have a friend who gets sick if he eats store bought eggs. One wonders why this is. Even Egglands best made him sick. YET he can eat the eggs my chickens lay. I don't feed organic since I can't afford too, but I also don't add anything drugs to my feed. Just the basic layer feed.

I have the reports and it's important to read Poultry magazines. My favorites are Back Yard Poultry of course and Practical Poultry from the UK. The UK magazine keeps me abreast of what is going on there and Europe. Mother Earth news is another decent magazine, but they delved into the religious stuff a bit and I didn't like that so I canceled my subscription.

I consider myself a Christian but I don't believe it's up to ME to add their two cents. I only need to know about Back Yard chickens and Hobby farming.

While BYC members may comment on the religious BYC itself does not and keeps things (Me) in check.

Take care, Love ya all,

Miles to go before I sleep.

Rancher
