NY chicken lover!!!!

To those of you selling eggs. Do you know if you qualify as sales tax exempt when you buy stuff for your flock? Do any of you have a DBA/Assumed Name for your farm? How did you get it?

I think u can get a tax exemption number if u go LLC. I believe that involves some paperwork and a filing fee of a couple hundred dollars. Have been considering it for my flock.

If you can get him to come in ...the rest of them should .
Can you catch him & bring him in at night ? Or give them treats in the coop & shut the door

Yeah I think he's the problem, they follow him. It's funny I put the silkies in with the rest a couple months ago and they still mostly hang out together. I don't get home until 10pm, so if they don't get it soon I'll have to talk the wife or kids into putting them in. I haven't had any predator problems except for the hawk so I haven't shut the 'pop door' all summer, but I will be this winter. They are pretty easy to get in, can pick them up like stuffed animals. Getting the wife or kids to do it nightly....they'd
half to remember before dark because they're a bunch of wimps scarred of the dark or boogie man or something lol.

Egg sales? Check your local stores, see if they have any local eggs. One of our stores does, organic free range $5.50dz. They must sell them cause the store has had them for awhile.
If you find some give them a call, they might give you some advice and point you in the right direction?
I'd rather keep it on the 'down low' nobody needs to know my business lol! I haven't got into selling eggs though. When we have to many I give them to family or fry them up for the dogs.

We upped our price to $3 when store prices started going up, but may need to raise them again.

There is a Avian Flu 101 seminar being held at Broome County Cooperative Extension in mid-October. Have to get the link when I'm on a real computer. They have it on Facebook and on the website. $5 registration fee. I plan on attending.
Do you have a date? This is an online thing? I once did a seminar thing for bees on line.

With the hoop copes do you close off the house part or keep it open in the winter? Thinking about using wax /oil cloth over the wire in chicken playhouse water and wind proof still lets light in any thoughts?

Rancher have you checked with any local feed stores? Down here the IBA sells feed cheaper then TSC or if looking for extender feed Logans sells their mix (think it's 16%) $10.00 50# there's no add minerals in it. Spent the last six weeks researching feeds for all the critters best nutrition for the buck. Family says the dog and cat eat better then they do-)

If anybody is looking for prepaid phone company customer service based in USA whisper me.
There isn't a feed store close to me. I'd have to rent a truck and make monthly trips. We just have our Chevy Cobalt for now.

My coops are covered with tarps and I open the door each day so they can go out even if there is not run.

I'd like to add runs but for this coop I need to figure a way to push it back into the woods a few feet. I've got the Marsh Daisies in it now and they are fliers. Nice birds, they follow me to the house and I've caught them sitting in the door way to the kitchen. I expect I could move it back with some help but it's just me. Because there are just the three I may add a couple of heat lights. I haven't decided yet. any thoughts anyone?

Don't know if anyone remembers me, but I finally got my chicks. I ordered 15. I have four Delaware girls, a Delaware rooster, and a mixed bag of ten more brown layer girls. Of course, they are only a week old, so that could change as they fledge out. I already have two Delaware that could pass for roo based on some sexing suggestions I saw here. My guesses for the rest are black Australorps, a partridge rocks, maybe a barred rocks (or another australorp), unless they are Jersey giants... possibly 3 sex links, possibly two buff orps... and then there is mystery chick. My tiny runt that I can NOT figure out. She seems to have the markings of a welsummer but that wasn't listed in the mixed bag of possibilities. Dark Cornish was listed, but her little one week old wings are light in color and nearly a cross between barred and partridge. Her head doesn't have the widows peak either, she had a dotted line. Can't wait to find out what she is.
