NY chicken lover!!!!

I started a small farm with a roadside stand. The DBA was under $40, the insurance is $500+ and the poultry license was free.  Just more NYS hoops as far as I am concerned but i run things as a business.Knowing my luck someone would twist their ankle on my stand or say my green eggs made them sick...just CYA

CYA is right. I'm getting my DBA tomorrow. I haven't looked into insurance, but I'm not operating a stand. I'm going to sell chicks and eggs, and I want all my business bases covered.

Question: I noticed a reddish color in one of the chicken's poo yesterday. They have no symptoms of illness. Could it be from what they ate or should I be concerned?

Have they had tomatoes ? sometimes chicks loose some of their stomach lining .
It is normal ...it is scary though . I have had it happen to chicks before ...but no other issues .
If it was blood it would be black ...I think

400
these are the sizes of my eggs. The tiny white ones are from my WL the others are from my production reds ( which we were told were RIR when we got them). My BA have not started laying yet but those girls are huge.

They love tomatoes. I'm keeping an eye on the poo. Oh, they've been wandering to the apple tree too- maybe that?

Just watch it...You will know if it is blood...trust me. Like Gramma said think of what they may have been fed.

Lots to catch up on and just skimmed through a lot of posts...I had my mom look into being tax exempt. She knows a lot more about taxes and the government then I do. She looked into it for me and said that from what she could find, for a "farm" to be tax exempt, more then 50% of their income should be coming from the farm. I'm not sure where she found that information.

It rained here for 2 days and everything is soaked. Everyone looked like drowned rats. Had to add some plastic to the Turkey hoop. It was a mud slick in there and their roost broke during the night so they had to sleep on the ground.

I felt SO bad for them that in the pouring rain I fixed their roost and covered more of their hoop and added some shavings to the mud to help them out.

Have to get cracking on finishing up the winter prep soon. I need to get the duck house moved and the rest of the wood chip pile moved so I can put the turkey house there so we can get a floor put in for winter. Trying to figure out what I want to do under the pool/water tubs in the duck house for winter. Thought about putting a pallet down, but not sure about it yet... Then there is the collection of pine needles and leaves. Lots to do and it is starting to get colder..

. Lots to do and it is starting to get colder..
always stuff to do here ...too
changing chickens in coops again ..I only have 3 cockerals left so ..
2 mommas & 2 itty babys went back in with the teens ..there is room now ...they all eat the baby food ..so that is one less chore to dish out
So the Mommas are back to terriorizing the teens ..so funny to see
2 little sumatras ruling the roost over teens who are 2 -3 times larger than them .
To dos :
Got to clean out the coops before winter .
and it is Time to start gathering grass & leaves for bedding for the winter

This is Tater Tot...my chicken loving puppy. He thinks they are his toys.

Couple of my Orpington girls checking out the yard.

The Orps look so huge compared to their rooster who is an EE.

Thought I would share some pics of the kids playing in the yard. Such a nice site without the neighbor dog with one in his mouth!

DBA filed. Easier than the state site makes it seem. County clerk. Fill out form. Pay fee ($25 here).
I'm going to begin documenting better than I have been. Any advice from those who have turned their hobby into a business is welcome.

I like the happy chicken pictures. :)

I hope everyone's winter prep goes well this weekend.
