I started a small farm with a roadside stand. The DBA was under $40, the insurance is $500+ and the poultry license was free. Just more NYS hoops as far as I am concerned but i run things as a business.Knowing my luck someone would twist their ankle on my stand or say my green eggs made them sick...just CYA

couldn't you just write "hatching" on your egg cartons and then if someone did say they eggs made them sick say, "I sold them hatching eggs". They weren't supposed to eat them?

Is that $500 plus a year? No way I could cover that cost. It would explain why eggs at the farm stand are so high though.

Do you have a copy of what is covered? Is that through your homeowners? Is there a law of some sort on selling eggs?

I do not have a copy of what is covered. It is a homeowners type policy under a farm organization. I know they had to shop around for it.

There is something written on selling eggs...They must be candled, washed and cooled to a certain degree. Also, you can't re-use your cartons. I wish I remembered where I found everything.

This is Tater Tot...my chicken loving puppy. He thinks they are his toys.

This one has grown up with them...so, he adores them. But, he stays on his line and the chickens frolic around him.

I found a great article on Martin Silverudd's experiments. If anyone is interesting at reading his study- It's a tough read but interesting to see how he created his breeds.

Should I be worried? Should any of us be worried? It would however explain why eggs at farmers markets cost so much, but not why store eggs cost so much.

To cover $500 I'd have to sell 181 dozen eggs. No way I could afford that. Even at $5 a dozen I couldn't. $41 a week in egg sales. That doesn't cover feed and cartons.

Where does the coverage go when selling chicks or chickens?
