They say the seeds have arsenic in them but I haven't had any problem feeding them apple pulp.
Actually store bought apple cider has no sugar added either, but it does have a preservative in it to prevent it from fermenting. So I press my own. I add about five pounds of sugar to five gallons, but there is no sugar in it after about a month Lol.
I toss mine apples with no ill effects.

Certainly ! I gave mine the apple remains ! I gave my flock a treat today of apples that I canned last year ...mixed with bird seed .
I use a food mill to do applessauce so no peeling. I just core them and cook them up. The cores go in the compost pile. Anything left after usinng the mill goes to the birds.
Ever canned/pickled crab apples? I'd like to try them...
I'd hoped to grow Crabapples but have to order a tree. It takes a few years to get apples though. Too not all apple varieties grow in all areas of the country so I have limitations on variety.

I've yet to find pickled anything that I like. I wish I did like pickles as they're easy enough to make.

Chickens are enjoying the weather today. Luckily it's my day off and I can get in a good coop cleaning. I've been thinking about winter and I have sand in my run...that will be pretty cold right? Maybe I should add some hay. Looking on Craigslist now for a bale. I want to add no more than 3 chickens and I'm trying to decide if I wait until spring, get pullets now or hatch some eggs. I know it's a little late for egg hatching and I wouldn't be able to keep all the chicks so that may not be the best option?

Found some barred rock, marans and EEs on Craigslist....decisions decisions :p

Hope you all have a fantastic day.

You've seen the pictures of my runs of course, but I like to dump in a bale of shavings every now and then.

Hatching is anytime if you've a good set up. I just had a horrible hatch but did manage to hatch 7 chicks. "Never put off for tomorrow what you can hatch today". At least I think that's how the saying goes.

I've picked up a weekend job working at a local family-owned cider mill. There is no sugar or preservatives added, but does go through a flash pasturization process.

And local folks drop of their carboys for filling with the non-pasturized stuff. :)

How do they flash pasteurize? Do they have a HTST?
I pasteurize mine by heating it up to 165 for 15 minutes, over board but not going to take any chances, don't want vinegar. I shake the trees and then pick them off the ground, wild apples the best for cider, some sweet some tart good balance. Use good champagne yeast takes it to 18%, natural ferment with no sugar added gives about 5%. Father in-law hand picks his apples and natural ferments.

They do fill carboys? !!! I didn't have time to press any this yr, I've been wanting to call Fly Creek cider mill in Cooperstown to see if they would fill my carboys, hoping it would be cheaper then buying gallons.
