NY chicken lover!!!!

No note mine.

I'm considering a Cochin hen or Silky to  use for hatching. Poor buckwheats eggs were duds except for the EE.  I don' tknow what i will do if I can't get more Birchens to hatch.

Can u breed to another color marans? Birchen is just a color, right? Probably silver S/S in there vs gold s+/s+ of the black copper marans? Or if u went w blue marans, depending on their base color, u should be able to get back to straight silver Birchen. That might create some depth of the gene pool while ur at it. I'd stay away from cuckoo tho bc the barred gene is dominant. Chicken color genetics r fun :D

Oh how funny you compare chickens to Rottweilers. I did that same to the insurance company. I have a rottweiler and a Sheppard mix as well as the flock. They came out 2 weeks ago to do an assessment of the property since we had some safety issues when we purchased. They saw a huge fenced off area with a building that was not there when we started the policy. The fence was garden and the building is the coop. So now we have to go into town and sign paperwork that states we won't sell chickens or eggs or we have to get a farm policy. Broome Co only allows so much livestock per family before it's considered a farm. I understand, they need to be covered incase the eggs or meat cause illness , just irritated me when they told me. Oh and to top the no chickens rule, my dang barn needs fixed in 30 days or its dropped from insurance. Stupid policy covers this but not that, the snow but not the wind, the moon but not the sun.. ARG Owning a home is stressful. Oh well at least I'm not paying someone else's mortgage, and my kids will always have a home to come back too.

I'm so sorry. What a pain. Here you are utilizing the land and improving the property and they just want to charge u more for it. Not fun. Your kids have no idea how lucky they r that u are investing in their future. Sending good thoughts.

Not new to New York, just to this area. I grew up in Auburn and lived in Marcellus for a few years. My husband grew up in Mexico (Oswego County). We moved back last year from New Jersey where I worked at a nursery for several years. I had a kid and suddenly needed to move closer to family!

I wonder if we know each other?

I was raised in Auburn as well. We moved to Ohio and came back to be near family 7 years later. We live in Phoenix (Oswego Co.) and my husbands family as well as several friends live in or around Cortland. Actually Gramma, my mom grew up in Jordan too come to think of it.

We've been to New Jersey and the only other states that are worse to drive besides New Jersey are Boston and Chicago.

We're the only ones in our little area that have chickens too. A few miles down the road are more folks with them. We're having fun so far. I LOVE watching the girls run! It's hilarious to see their heads wobble as their fluffy butts run.

thank you for the good thoughts. My kids are all fairly young so country life is all they remember. I hope they keep what they learn when they grow up.

Been having a rough couple days here and know you guys would understand. Made the decision to put down one of my horses. The grey Arab mare in the profile pic. She was kicked in the knee, so we bought her to save her from the auction house and certain slaughter truck fate. Had her for 13 years. The calcification has spread from her shifting weight off of the bad leg. All 4 knee/hock joints are calcified. And up her shoulder of the bad leg from the angle of her knee. She hides any pain well, which makes me constantly question my decision. But we don't want her to suffer in the cold weather and worry that she will go down this winter, then rendering truck would be the only option. Going to have her euthanized and buried here in the next couple weeks. Working on lining up the vet and a backhoe.
It sucks. Let my 5 year old daughter know last night. Lots of tears around here.

There is a HTST where I work also, but I work in the lab and don't run it. You're a processor?

Yeah, in Walton. 100 yr old place. Almost got the axe this week. Multi billion$ company that owns us was merged/bought by another bigger multi billion$ company. They were closing three places in NY. The state, well taxpayers anyway, threw them a bone to keep ours open, also keeping another open in Avon. Doesn't seem right but I guess it's good many didn't lose jobs.
They already cut a couple thousand jobs nationwide, and are still closing seven more plants.

Sorry to hear that. Tough decision, but better then suffering, ain't like you can send them to a retirement home. I've seen old horses suffer in the winter, not right at all, and those owners were rich.

That is a tough decision, but sounds like the humane one. So sorry...
