Lisa523...I have never heated my coops and we had below zero temps with windchill last year. Didn't lose oNE bird. Silkies and chickens in general can tolerate cold. It's drafts and poor ventilation that will kill them. My silkies are out the door every day no matter what. They are tough.

Howdy all. Sorry for the long absence. Been working lots. Cheeps are doing well for the most part. I did lose my silkie roo Legolas last month to an unknown cause. He was almost five. I was devastated. He was my boy. His girls miss him as well. Little big man is now the ruler of that side of the yard. Not sure yet what I'm going tok do breeding wise. My reds are well and the Duke is proving to be an exceptional rooster. Best one ever.

I hope everyone is well. I have spent 5 weeks battling severe bronchitis and still suffer from the aftermath. Is there any updates as to chickenstock or if nutty is having a gettogether? Too many pages to read through.

Hi there Shodack! I just happened to come on for a visit and saw your sweet post. All is well. It's been very busy the past few weeks. We were preparing for a terminally ill foster child to come live his/her life out here with us. I prayed very hard that the birth family would come around for this little one. While we are trying to expand our own family, what was best for the child was to live days home with the people they know. By the grace of God it must have worked out. We have certainly seen some sad cases lately.

After that we had my cousins kids over for a weekend and they were sick. Ugh! That meant that our daughter got sick, my husband and luckily I've seemed to have kept it at bay thus far by downing vitamins, herbs and the likes.

We had a lovely Thanksgiving. I hope everyone's Thanksgiving was a good one!


I come with a question tonight. My easter egger (Lady Mary), had blood on her back tonight. This was the first I've seen a little bald spot and blood. I'm pretty good at looking the girls over so I would have seen it the last couple of days. They've been out free ranging for a few hours but never left alone. I KNOW it wasn't my dog because while she is docile with them, I never leave her outside alone with them. As you all said a while back, you never trust them alone with the girls so I haven't.

At any rate, I looked her over and she even let me look underneath without fighting me. I ran in the house, grabbed some warm soapy water, a wash cloth and some warm rinsing water. I cleaned the area, then used a small amount of peroxide on her back which a chicken blogger mentioned. I wiped the small amount of blood away to notice hear feathers were missing. Some were coming in and some were missing and all I could see were the holes. I'm guessing she's molting but didn't know she'd molt in cold temps like this. I added some triple antibiotic ointment on (which the blogger said to keep on hand) it though I'm always hesitant to put antibiotics on anyone/thing and gently set her down.

Do they bleed from molting or do you think she was pecked by another girl? I have seen a couple of them with their feathers up on their neck which I'm assuming means they're telling each other who's boss. I also saw where other birds will go after feathers when they are not getting enough protein in their diets because the feathers are protein? Not sure if I got that right.

Another thing I'm wondering is I'm seeing some other girls with white dander of some sort on their necks. Please don't tell me it's mites! I ran out of DE a couple weeks ago and the garden center we go to doesn't have any more of the organic kind because they are closing this month until spring. I have no idea where to buy DE so I can spread it in the coop. We had a bonfire last week, so I used the ashes in their bath in the run. Other than all of that, I'm hoping that I've done all I can and everyone is okay. I am a bit concerned for my EE'er though. Since she's missing a few feathers on her back, will she get too cold over night?

Been having a rough couple days here and know you guys would understand. Made the decision to put down one of my horses. The grey Arab mare in the profile pic. She was kicked in the knee, so we bought her to save her from the auction house and certain slaughter truck fate. Had her for 13 years. The calcification has spread from her shifting weight off of the bad leg. All 4 knee/hock joints are calcified. And up her shoulder of the bad leg from the angle of her knee. She hides any pain well, which makes me constantly question my decision. But we don't want her to suffer in the cold weather and worry that she will go down this winter, then rendering truck would be the only option. Going to have her euthanized and buried here in the next couple weeks. Working on lining up the vet and a backhoe.
It sucks. Let my 5 year old daughter know last night. Lots of tears around here.

I am absolutely sorry for that loss. It's so sad when we lose our animals. They become such a huge part of our lives. You gave her quality of life after what she has been through. I know the decision was hard but you did the right thing even though it hurts your heart.

Talking about roosters... A family that I sold some chicks too ended up with a rooster. They don't really want a roo especially one that is so much bigger then the hens that they have. He is big boy. I hatched out 4 orp eggs and 3 of them turned out to be roosters. I have 2 of the roos and they are about the same size as my turkey hens (only shorter) . Any one interested in a Splash Orpington Rooster? If I can't find him a home he will most likely go in the freezer. She said that he is well behaved.

I also have a bantam cochin roo that I wouldn't mind selling. I would even sweeten the deal and make it a pair with a cochin hen or possibly a trio with the addition of a frizzled hen. All hatched this summer.

Also looking to sell my turkey hens. I have 4 Red Slate hen. I culled all the toms now have the 4 girls left over and not sure I want to keep raising turkeys. The kids were afraid of the tom's especially after Big Tom came after them, and they don't like to play outside when the turkeys are out. I hate having to keep them locked up on the nice days. I'm working with the kids in case I can't find a home for the girls. They know that they girls won't come after them, but they are still scared.

My daughter, Brooke, will be three on Tuesday... Happy/sad moment in a mother's life, every year that passes. She is turning into just a super awesome kid, and though I never thought I was cut out for the mothering thing, I'm really loving seeing her grow... We hosted her birthday/Thanksgiving yesterday for 15 people. My first big meal for the family.

On another note, I'm glad I jumped into this thread recently, I've really enjoyed getting to know you all a bit. Dorothea

Im a little worried about my 4 silkies i have . im new with silkies and i dont heat my coops. Last year we got down to -30 . so now that is is colder i go out and check them often at night. Thankfully they do roost with the other chickens on the roosting bars. Vut i have seen my one silkie rooster shiver when it was 20 out. So im wondering how they will do in winter.

Can we get a look see at your coop?

Do you have a Roo ? No ?
By squatting she is showing submission to you ...she may feel you are above her on the pecking order or are her Roo .
Does she shake herself after you put her down ? like she has been mated ?

Some of the girls do, but not Deirdre. It's like she really goes into a trance to the point where if I move she would fall over! We have 3 Bantam roosters - she chases them around the barnyard! When we did have a full size rooster she would stare him down.....

wow he is huge. I am looking for a roo to boss my rir and bard rock around. But he cant be docile. That was the problem with my last roo woth them he was very docile, i loved him but they would peck him til you could see meat and blood. I miss him, he passed away I would love him but with winter coming up i cant intergrate a new member atm. Sry
