NY chicken lover!!!!

not nesacery old, but not young. He is 70 she is 65ish. Some jobs we get paid for others not. Mostly the care of the horses is to educate my family and I on equine care. We plan on expanding our animals from just chickens to large animals as well.
Saw some ladies yesterday riding on the old Erie canal. It was nice. The grandkids loved seeing the horses. I hear ya on the old though. There are lots I don't do anymore. Like did post holes with my digger. It takes me a couple of days to do them. I used to hire a teenager. I still need two, maybe four more holes dug.

Everyone keeps saying they are getting fewer eggs now. Is that due to older hens? I have 18 pullets and all lay well, I get14-16 eggs a day. I guess the question in that is , if I want eggs year round should I grow out new pullets every spring? What age before a hen is no longer tender, and has to slow cook?

We use blue seal all flock and the girls are thriving. I would assume being Purina it's good stuff. Plus the advantages of all flock are that you can buy 1 feed for chickens, ducks, geese, and (my next venture) turkey's.
Saw turkeys on CL for $20 which I thought was cheap.

A lady at the bookstore offered me a free rabbit. I didn't take her up on it, but will stop in to see her and take it. If it's still available.

Too bad your in Syracuse, hubby and I do lots of work for people . We spend 90% of our time building, cleaning, moving or planning something for us or the neighbors. We get bored easily so we stay busy.

@tao chick just to further enable you on ducks, my ducks just eat regular layer feed and are fine

Flock Raiser works for them too.

For anyone that doesn't know, Dumor, the cheaper Tractor Supply brand chicken feed, is just Purina repackaged for TSC. It's the same thing, so if you use Purina and want to save a bit, just buy Dumor instead.
I do like Dumor 20% grower/starter. I think the chicks grow faster on it. It is expensive but I think it's worth it.

I will NOT buy from Runnings anymore. Cheap feed is just not worth it. Plus I don't know why but I think it's not stored right. One time they had a large fan blowing on some feed and I thought, "what's up with that?"

Well DW does make a good pork roast dinner. She also does Christmas cookies. She's may thousands for weddings. Once she made Cheese cakes. She made one for each table plus the Wedding cake.

She's a very good cook.

All this talk of more chickens, ducks and turkeys!!! My chicken math brain is rearing its head... I have convinced my husband we NEED more chickens next spring, I have also convinced him, I NEED ducks for the garden.(because of all the slugs of course) after all we got none of our chard because of them last season. I am very lucky he loves me so much and is willing to do what he can to help me out.

I still have to be be very considerate because he is the one that cares for my animals in the winter months. Due to my illness I am unable to do it in the winter myself but I am able most times in the other season.

Okay now I have a stupid question but here goes. I would like to get a couple frizzled hens... The ones I have found are mostly frizzled "bantam" Cochin... Do they come in a regular size hen ? If they do who sells them? I really don't want bantams because right now I have some really nasty birds that will be replaced when I have others to fill there spots. They are absolutely horrid to the rest of the hens and especially to my smallest bird Omelet. I am afraid everyday that they are really going to hurt Omelet. She was supposed to be a Marans but she is tiny... about the size and shape of a D'uncle with the coloration of a dark buff laced bird.
