NY chicken lover!!!!

I forgot to add that a good dual purpose bird is pretty big and could easily use 8-10 square feet per bird, but could fit in 5 sqft. If you go with egg production birds they are sometimes built smaller. The best source up here is craigslist. In the spring a lot of chicks are hatched, so extra pullets would be listed mid summer to late summer. I'm hatching eggs in February and March and if you make the long trek to the mini chicken stock, someone could bring you pullets.

What is this mini chicken stock you speak of, Tao chick? Is it like a stock fair? Where and when does it occur?

Also, with regards to space per chicken, I don't have a coop, as such. They would wander around my small backyard during the daylight hours, then at night, I would put them in a pen or cage in my shed to sleep. At least that's what I hope to do. It's what I'm doing with my lone rooster right now. I know I'll have to give enough room for nest boxes in their pen. Please let me know what you all think. I don't have enough room in my yard for a big coop that they can spend the day in, so I would let them loose in the morning and lock them up at night.

In my experience? Delawares are good layers but not meaty enough and a work in progress.
RIR's are good but I'm not sure how meaty they are.
Delawares are super meaty if you get them from the right source. Delawares were a work in progress many yrs ago, they have gone way downhill in the hatcheries, if you want I will look for and post a site/person that sells excellent Dels, big ones.
RIR's IMHO, best layers, big carcase, but tougher meat (nothing a pressure cooker or crock pot can handle) and can be a little mean...

Now allow me to vent some.

Does anyone else find that BYC site makes your computer "rev". Mine only seems to "rev" when I'm on BYC and it hesitates. I type a bit but it doesn't print to the screen right away.

Also it hesitates pulling up the screen.

How can I eliminate these blasted advertisements. I think that's why it only happens on BYC. Because it's got to pull up these stupid video and other advertisements.

I have to close all other windows and reboot, but eventually my computer starts "reving".

I do intend up pull everything and redo all the cords, Open the case and dust that. I have a "cleaning site" but have yet to run it because I'm afraid I'll lose all the pictures. I'll be checking that out before I do that.

I watch CBS this morning with not trouble. My grandson watches videos with not trouble. It just seems it's the BYC site that this happens too.
Same here, with our newer laptop, windows 8. Terrible!!!!! Wife broke the charger where it hooks into the laptop, we resurrected our old laptop, windows 7, works with no flaws. That was weeks age, wife doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get a new plug...Lol, we have to use our really old desktop keyboard on the side for letters d and b but still way smoother than our newer one.. Also our newer laptop, I hated everytime I touched the swipper pad thingy, weird stuff would pop up and get in my way grr. I hear the new windows is good.

I have a question. I was assigned deviled eggs for a Christmas party on Saturday. Are there any special tips to making them with fresh eggs or do I devil as normal? Also how on earth do I peel these dang things?!?!
Good luck with that, I've tried every suggestion, none is fool proof. You had good luck this time,,,let us know how good it goes when you try it again, I never heard of that one, oven...

Murray hatchery has a new breed for sale called a Whiting True Blue. I'm going to order me some on the spring. They lay blue eggs they aren't Easter eggers, araucanas or ameraucanas
Your thoughts
WOW! Never heard of them! My guess is someone has been breeding fly tie chickens with americuana and has just perfected the breed, a hybrid, but breeds true, Murry obviously is capitalizing on this. I bet they sell everyone they hatch! I almost want to order some!!!

"Chixsee" is a bit over amorous with the little chicken and usually falls off face planting pulling out his beak with a bunch of dirt stuck to it.

LOL
Congrats on your 1st Broody !
1st broodys dont always stay ...so you might want to test her for a few weeks with fake eggs .
Though as She is a Ayam Cerami..she might be good to go .
They dont like being moved at all usually ..sometimes it breaks them
If you move her take the whole nest with her & trap her in so she cant get out . Kennel would be fine
Does anyone pick on her or bother her ? if they dont she should be fine .
My broodys incubate in the nest box usually ..
I take them out once a day for exercise & to poop & eat .
I feed them once a day in the nest box ( a mix of watered feed )
Then at hatch time I move them all into their own cage ..for the babies safety

As far as Pohl's no the feed is not organic but is soy free. I haven't been able to find organic anywhere else.I have searched high and low.
the organic feed I got from Crazy was 50# and I believe it was right around $20 a bag. I originally went with all organic then after months I realized I couldn't afford it i slowly mixed in the non organic until they accepted it without a fuss. Plus we do the fermented feed to at least give them that benefit.
I supply eggs to my in-laws, and my children, free of charge, to help with their finances as all the kids work and attend college so money is very tight for them. My in-laws are on a fixed income so it helps them and there are a few ladies in the retirement building my husband manages that are truly on a very restrictive income that weren't eating enough so they get free eggs too. I guess one day we might sell eggs but for now we're just trying to help where we can.

At 16$ for 100# is a steal for me. Basically I would love to feed organic but at this point financially, it isn't feasible.

Broody girl, Midget seems to be just fine in the nest box and no one seems to bother her. I guess for now I'll leave her there until the babies hatch and then move her to the kennel chicks and all. Do you think it would be helpful if I put a piece of chicken wire over the opening at the 19th day or so. My concern is that the BSL's I have, given the chance, would kill the chicks. They are truly vile birds, very aggressive specifically the top hen ...she's ruthless. I have considered culling her on many occasions. Her name is "Dinner" she is so bad.:( I haven't only because I was waiting for spring/summer to replace all of them. They are my 3 best layers & "Dinner" lays Jumbo eggs. I understand pecking order and all that jazz but this seems to go way beyond that.

What would you do in this instance???

I would never consider a mixed flock with BSL again or advise anyone to consider it... a typical flock at a farm with all BSL's for eggs, fine.
