NY chicken lover!!!!

I haven't been around much in the past few days because it's been a little hectic here. My family bought a house in town across the VT border so I'll be moving. If the house had had at least an acre of land I could have taken 25 birds with me. Sadly, it's only on a quarter acre so no poultry allowed. So now I have to figure out what to do. My grandmother, who lives five minutes down the road from the house we bought is allowed to have anything she wants, and I'm hoping she'll allow me to keep my birds there. If not, I'll be making a big move - me and all my birds will be going to live with Metella. Still trying to get everything figured out so we'll see what happens. I know that one way or another I won't be giving up my birds.

In other news some of my birds are missing. Mostly roosters - my NN rooster Bowtie has vanished along with my NN frizzle OE pullet. My cochin cockerel, who was shaping up to be gorgeous, is also gone. I'm not sure if something got them or they wandered off and died in the cold, but there is no sign of them.
oh no! You've worked hard on your flock. I hope for the best!

I'm so sorry . I pray you find a solution that means you keep your flock. I can't imagine having to give up my projects.

I'm sure you'll find a solution that works for you and your birds! I know there are only a few predators that leave no signs of the birds. Foxes do that but tend to leave feathers. Otherwise I wonder if someone would take them?

If it's mostly roosters is there any chance someone stole them? Are they free ranging. Is there an aerial predator around. Someone nearby had an owl attack.

I am so sorry about your roosters. Any luck yet finding them or evidence of their loss? I hope things work out for you in finding a new place to live with your birds!

I'd be tempted to order chicks this year just to save myself the hassle of rehoming a zillion roosters, but I work during all the times they'd be delivered. So I'll be hatchin' again this year. TSC always has chicks when it's below freezing and ends the sales right when it might be warm enough to start them outside. (I am NOT doing inside chicks anymore if I can help it)..
TSC will order them for you. They had a pamphlet at my store for them. I am going to order some leghorns from McMurray. I need some laying machines...since my birds are pretty but not reliable producers.

I found poor Shorty dead this morning in the run. I think he might have died yesterday since he would have gone in last night. I did quarantine him a while ago but when he seemed okay I put him back in the coop. He was just laying there on his back with his legs in the air. This cold weather is getting to be to much.
Sorry about your loss of Shorty. That's such a bummer.

So, after I froze all my plastic waterers, and glass ones, I have gone to the rubber bowl and the rubber goat water trough. So, my yard now has enough little ice shaped bowls to build an igloo. I am seriously disliking winter...

I did not know TSC will special order for you.

I just hang the Red and white/clear plastic hangers for the winter and use the Black tubs from TSC. If they freeze I have a rubber mallet to knock the ice out. If not and the water is clean, I just pour the Hot water, making sure it hits the same spot until it breaks through the ice to the unfrozen water. Because they are inside the run and have a wind block as the runs are covered and on the ground they sometimes don't freeze solid. I suppose the heat from the manure and decomposing litter keep them somewhat heated.

Does anyone here have a special name their grandkids call them?

My daugther in TX told DW that the Grandson said yesterday, "you know who my favorite Grampa and Munga are? Daughter says now who? He says, Grampa and Munga.

We don't know where he got the name Munga for DW but that's what he calls her.

He likes to eat "french" eggs. He and I would eat breakfast together. He means fried. He also won't eat anything but real maple syrup now since I've visited. Told his mother "Don't think you're going to feed me that crap" , when she tried to give him the usual Corn Syrup being passed off as "real" maple syrup.

They now have to buy the real deal.

This years Christmas painting was made with his and his sisters feet, making three mice. One year he made us a Christmas tree made with hand prints.
