NY chicken lover!!!!

I once had a nice climber that grew and bloomed, but I foolishly didn't cover it in the winter and it got killed. I now wrap my roses even though they may be hardy to zone 4.

I have the David Austin Catalog and planted Princess Margaret but it's not doing as well as I had hoped. I'll fuss over it next year and see if I can't get it growing better.

Tasha Tudor said she never fussed over her roses. If they grew they grew. I've tried to have that same attitude but when you pay $70 for three rose bushes you fuss. That was for three but one died.

DW loves English roses.

I'll mention it again around cutting time.

She doesn't do much with them except keep the weeds down and throw a bit of horse manure their way. The chickens, geese, and ducks punish them, and they still grow like mad and have heavy blooms. We live on clay soil at 1000 feet and other than this winter we have had 20-30 below, so I think they would do well for you.

I haven't been around much in the past few days because it's been a little hectic here. My family bought a house in town across the VT border so I'll be moving. If the house had had at least an acre of land I could have taken 25 birds with me. Sadly, it's only on a quarter acre so no poultry allowed. So now I have to figure out what to do. My grandmother, who lives five minutes down the road from the house we bought is allowed to have anything she wants, and I'm hoping she'll allow me to keep my birds there. If not, I'll be making a big move - me and all my birds will be going to live with Metella. Still trying to get everything figured out so we'll see what happens. I know that one way or another I won't be giving up my birds.

In other news some of my birds are missing. Mostly roosters - my NN rooster Bowtie has vanished along with my NN frizzle OE pullet. My cochin cockerel, who was shaping up to be gorgeous, is also gone. I'm not sure if something got them or they wandered off and died in the cold, but there is no sign of them.
bummer!! Now I won't get those awesome frizzle eggs. :( I am sorry about your birds and to hear you will be moving - my hubby wants to move to vermont someday so we might see you there. I'd have to be able to get to Albany tho. :(

Sad news today...two of my chicks were killed by my dogs. DH didn't notice the basement door wasn't closed all the way..he feels horrible, but it's an honest mistake. I still have two chicks left, lost a silkie and barred blue egg layer.
I am sorry. I completely know how you must feel. Unfortunately, everything loves a chicken. (My shih tzu's are chick killers too. They even ate my baby peacock when it escaped. Big dogs-no issues)

I know when my chicks come into my post office they are always early...like before the office opens- 6:30 am ish. Maybe you can check with your post office and see when they get in their express shipments.
We'll see what the work sitch is when chick time comes but the shipping chicks thing doesn't work out so well here - no one ships overnight anymore, so they go to the big PO in Saratoga -they make me wait until opening. :p Plus I leave for work at 530AM so no good. I'll probably just hatch a bunch o mutt chicks again. =)
