NY chicken lover!!!!

Took advantage of the warm weather yesterday to stuff a hose down Roscoe's hole in the chicken coop. Flooded it real good. Never did see him come out of that hole or any of the others.

Hoped that he might drown down in his burrow. We then stuffed all of the holes with dirt and packed them down real well. Woke up this morning to a fresh new hole.

I wonder sometimes if when I have a sick or dieing chicken if they didn't eat something they shouldn't have. (this computer is messed up, this should be at the bottom but when I hit enter it goes up here.

) I think I need a hammer to fix it.

Anyhow the choice is yours.

Tis odd question time. Everyone talks about feeding scrambled egg to the flock. Is it also acceptable to feed them left over cooked chicken? With 5 kids there are nights we have leftovers and I prefer to feed what I can to the dogs and chickens.

IMHO, and I always weigh in on this. You can feed your chickens whatever you like. However like humans chickens need a balanced diet. Like kids they will fill up on whatever and many get sick or not lay as intended.

Once saw the xray of a hne that had eaten a 1" screw. I suspect she was a Punk breed and into heavy metal. Seriously, chicken bones are not good for dogs or chickens.

I took advantage of the warmer weather also and cleaned out the red coop. OMG they spilled so much water in there it the bedding was so damp. It must have been frozen underneath. So today I need to buy new bedding to put it down. This hasn't been the best of winters. My waters kept over flowing and I was buying new ones.

You dont practice deep litter ? you add the new bedding on top of the old ..the bottom decomposes ..
Makes great compost / dirt

I was, but it really smelled bad and the litter was all wet. I didn't think I could keep adding dry on top as it all kept getting wet. Maybe I did it wrong, I'm not sure. The other coop is doing fine with the deep liter method though.

I wouldn't recommend feeding bones to chickens either. They used to grind all sorts of bones to add to chicken feed, probably for the calcium. Doubt everyone had easy access to oyster shell a hundred yrs ago.
Saw this at the Delaware county fair.

Got two eggs from my big birds, and a soft shelled egg on the ground of the coop. Looks like the egg machine *might* be kicking back up. I hope so.

Slackers.
