Here's some of my flock! 5 roosters (Lav Orp, SLW, BCM, Pioneer, and Barred Rock) and 56 hens (plus 27 chicks I just hatched Friday! Super cute!)

My coop was built to be what I thought we needed in the beginning. It is insulated, has Marvin Windows and rectangular vents on each gable end, which are North and South. It is very nicely built
It is a very nice coop
I tried to integrate her I sprayed all her toes with blue coat. Then I sprayed all the rooster and the other hens feet with the blucoat. I did this for about 6 weeks and then let it wear off. No one pecked at that toe and everyone had purple legs..

first six chicks on Thursday Congrats !
We have a little brooder right now in a 50 gal Rubbermaid container, but I know they'll need more room very quickly. Does anyone know where I can find a giant cardboard box? Or pallets? I live in Cato and I can travel pretty much anywhere within an hour drive.
What are you using for a heat lamp ? They could get hot in that small space .
boxes - try calling lowes auburn or Walmart or Tops may have some ..Your not too far from me Im in Jordan
Thank you so much for the response. We're looking for Easter Eggers and orpingtons. I have young kids and they are stoked about the idea of a blue chicken. I think that they're thinking they are royal blue chickens. We had silver laced Wyandottes and I'm hoping to find a few of those at some point as well. Let me know when and where to come get chicks. We'd love to support you.
Blue equals Grey ..LOL...
who are you answering ? if you click quote ...you get the quote you are answering to too

I work in albany M-F. - happy to trade eggs with others near there when I stop getting frozen eggs. :) I have mixed flocks but there's a good chance you'll get at least a few naked necks as I have one NN roo and one EE roo, plus a bunch of olive egger NN hens in with the bunch.

Hi gramma thanks for responding!

I did a lot of research on heating lamps and alternatives (I'm a bit of a nervous Nellie when it comes to fire hazards) and we've decided on a mama heating pad cave so the chicks aren't constantly bathed in light and can get used to night and day while still being warm.

I'll call lowes and Home Depot and hopefully they have a refrigerator box or something.

Thanks again!

Hi all! I'm Ashley and my husband and I are going to pick up our first six chicks on Thursday from the Poultry Hatchery in Clifton Springs. We're so excited!!

We have a little brooder right now in a 50 gal Rubbermaid container, but I know they'll need more room very quickly. Does anyone know where I can find a giant cardboard box? Or pallets? I live in Cato and I can travel pretty much anywhere within an hour drive.

Thanks in advance!

I use a pair of big boxes taped together lengthwise hole cut in middle, brooder light on one side and food/water on other. That way they have plenty of room to get away from heat if they want. I put plastic under boxes cause they will leak through.
If you can't find big enough boxes, just make your own out of smaller ones.

Also, has anyone purchased chicks from the poultry hatchery in Clifton springs? I'm getting good vibes from them so far but I'd like to hear other people's experiences.
