A lot has been going on here, it's crazy. Good news first, my husband got to take his collar off from his neck surgery and is back at work.

I am happy to hear your hubby is back to work...but, I certainly don't blame you for being upset about the financial changes. Best of luck with everything.

Go for it all? Bird that looks like a BA, big as a Brahma, come in black blue and splash, and white.
Just get some Jersey Giants. They lay way better than a brahma also.

I would love, love, love to get some Giants, I think they are beautiful birds.However as you have pointed out before it takes them so long to mature and having them for meat just isn't feasible and with our Urban coop/yard situation being what it is its even worse because I really don't have the space to allow them to hang out a whole year.

Well I am sorry for they troubles folks are having and hope things look up soon.

I haven't been on since I have such a hard time with the site and it's hesitation when typing and scrolling. It was and is drving me nuts! Okay I already am nuts but worse nutty.

My hatch is done and I'm disappointed 7 out of 29 eggs. 9 chicks hatched but two had to be put down. One has yet to fluff up, but seems okay.

Looks to be 4 del or CRocks, 1 daisy and two EE's.

I will confess to not watching the humidity closely and while there were two thermo/hygrometers they never did match up. While ones temp was high the humidity reading was low, the other had a lower temp and a higher humidity reading.

I just know most of these eggs were viable but just never pipped or hatched.

The two chicks that had to be put down did hatch by themselves but just weren't healthy.

I'll be cleaning up the incu and setting more. I don't know why.

None of the marans were viable, but the one olive egger did hatch. The other didn't.

I hesitate to mention this news and am not sure why I'm sharing. We have a friend who was diagnosed with brain cancer shortly after DW was and he is terminal. The shocking news is today we find out his sister, who has been sick with pnuemonia, has bone cancer! Can you believe it? This after learning another friend has prostate cancer! We belong to a large church and have many friends but these folks are young. Well in their 50's and 60's. I'm really in shock.

In a situation like that you wonder where they grew up, and what was in the soil, air or water... Sad.

A lot has been going on here, it's crazy. Good news first, my husband got to take his collar off from his neck surgery and is back at work.

Bad news #1- Greg (my husband has very little new bone growth, after the surgery.

Bad news #2- Greg's surgeon has ordered a bone growth stimulator... insurance company is refusing to pay for it. Now get this ... they will only pay for the stimulator if it is for a part of the spine that isn't part of the neck. Huh??? Stupid me I thought your neck was part of your spine.

Bad news #3- My husband's employer just notified us that we need to pay our portion of the health insurance benefit fee by March 21st, $767.12 + $310.57 for the dental and eyeglass coverage. Huh??? First we heard of this, at all. Although they/she did apologize for letting this little fact slip her mind. Uhm... okay??? I think???

Bad news#4- my daughter gave me her 30day notice that she is moving out of my house. So I will need to start paying the mortgage on April 1st. Hmmm, thank you, this came out of no where.

Good News #2- After a bit of a melt down and giving myself a massive headache. I'm still standing! I'll manage somehow. I always do... probably because there really isn't any other option.

Now back to a happier topic... Chickens.

And I have room for 6 more eye candy chickies! The rest have to serve a function... besides being super-Dee-super spoiled.
3 or so Silkies maybe a Frilkie. My favourite colours are blue and splash. If white I would like them to have the turquoise earlobe. Beards & muffs would be great.

After having my chickens for the year I have come to find a couple of breeds I don't want in my flock anymore.
I realize I need a durable, cold hardy breed that is worth the effort to butcher if they hatch out as roo's and if a hen lays really well. Of the breeds I have the only one that I have which should have done both is my Black Aussie, Margaret. However, she is so far from breed standards because she is so tiny, but little girl has never backed off more than a day on laying egg.
Does anyone have normal size BAs?
Does anyone have Blue Australorpes?
Another breed I have considered is the Brahma. I will continue this tomorrow as I have just fallen asleep while using my kindle make this entry.

I have 5 BA that I am crossing to my lavender orpington boy starting in 3 weeks. I just started seperating them to breeding groups. If you would like some eggs or chicks just let me know.

My BA are big girls and a beautiful black Bob is very large with a good feed ratio. For his size he is not a huge eater. If you want pics I can get them tomorrow.

I'm hatching some more silkies various colors in time for chickenstock probably or a bit before. I have 3 australorp EE mixes that are super cute that are 2 days old. I'm keeping one of those for sure and definitely the little turken mix. I've heard good things about australorps! This chicken math thing is for real! lol

Chicken math is rough. I started with only 10 so each kid had 2. Then hubby bought me 10 more. Then 2 passed. Then I wanted a roo or 2 so I got 2. Then I saw a beautiful lavender orpington boy that needed a country home so I got him. Ack!!! Now comes the hard part, who to breed to who? I want to split the 3 boys into 3 separate coops and give each boy a few of each breed of lady's. Now it's up to 21 and the hunt for an incubator. . I only want to hatch a few, ,I promise.

Picked up the Wheaten Ameraucana eggs from Chris tonight, they started laying again so now I have 8 lovely blue eggs to set. Plus 14 Wyandottes. Plus 14 Isbar. Plus 12 Spitz. And my egg turner only holds 42. (That adds up 48)

Best of luck there! My basement is housing the 7 silver spangled appenzeller spitzhauben I hatched from @matella as well as 5 silkies I hatched from @rubynala97 plus the two Sebastopol goslings from "glory to God farm" ... Plus the the 5 hatchlings of colored eggs from Shannon Tabor on Facebook... So worth it all. Now I've got 27! Eggs in my Brinsea Eco 20 for the Easter hatch along.... It's happening!

You are not kidding that chicken math is real! Add an incubator, and the potential breeds available are amazing, then add in a couple mature breeding groups and a projects and you are really in trouble. Every egg holds incredible potential... Need to know what might become of that egg... Stop, walk away... Or better yet, wash the eggs and sell them or give them away as eating eggs... Lol. No trouble here. Just hangin w my chickens
