NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi folks,

I just signed up tonight, although I've been lurking here off and on for a couple of years. I'm from the finger lakes region and started my flock of Buff Orps last summer along with a couple dozen freedom rangers. The Orps are doing great and started laying recently. I just ordered this years rangers and will be getting the first half of them in a couple of weeks.

Hello! ! Welcome to BYC! I was a lurker for awhile also, great people here, lotsa ideas and info for whatever endeavor your searching!
Let us know how you do with your 'freedom rangers'. Size weights growth etc... pics are nice.

Chicken are a really BAD hobby to get into..

No matter what you have you want something different.

No matter how many you have, you want more.

No matter, if you start with chickens, then you want ducks, turkeys, pheasant ...

Yeah, someone should have warned me.
I know....we should start a support group...LOL at one point I had about 150. My feed bill is more than our household grocery budget...You should see my yard...it looks like a tiny town of chickens!

A girl I work with has been asking me about chicks for a few weeks now. I let her know I set a bunch of eggs & a few days later she couldn't wait to tell me: she stopped into TSC and bought a 6-pack of bantams. I think TSC is doing just fine, lol.

I have a house sitter that takes care of the cats, parrot, and chickens when I need to go out of town for a day or two. She's not real keen on the chickens, but they do alright.
She's going to be a little bummed that her TSC chicks are not even remotely as cool as your birds!!!

I had to break down and get a new iPod for xmas, the other was 5 years old and 16g. New one is the 64g, so I can add apps again.
I will be looking to sell chicks once they hatch, no way I need this many. I want to keep a couple for eye candy.
Mine is driving me batty. Of course the highly fluctuating house temp is no help.

52 eggs in an incubator for 42 lol
Plus 6 of my own under a broody. Go Easter Hatchers!
Let me know. I will buy any 1st gen off you that you don't want.

Welcome to Hotel California. You can enter anytime you like but you can never leave.

Orps are a nice breed for the north. Though most heavy breeds are.

@everyone: I set more eggs today. Guy was a no show for the C. Rocks. No phone call either. I'll call him and see what the deal is.

Rancher,

I am quite impressed with the Buff Orpingtons. I have 4 hens and 1 roo. The hens started laying at 20 weeks and I was getting close to 2 dozen eggs a week until one went broody a couple weeks ago. She is setting on 3 that should hatch later this week. They forage really well, and when they are able to free range, they may go several days and hardly touch their feed. I'm hoping I end up with a couple more hens out of the three eggs my broody is on. If not I will be looking for a few more to add this year.

Think my egg turner quit on me. (Insert panic here). It was working before I put eggs in, but now I only see it pointing north, has not rotated south. Ugh. Tried unplug and replugging it in, motor is hot. :faceplant
