NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi, just wanted to introduce myself. Brand new to chickens ,waiting to get my chicks now. Really excited to start my flock. I'm in southern Monroe county. We garden organically and will feed organically too. Looking forward to the wealth of knowledge I know I will find here. On my way to the learning page!
welcome. We are a very friendly flock, some a bit odd (me) and some very bad enablers (99% of us). All are still learning and happy to share our knowledge.

I'm not sure where you are located but chickenstock is in Harpursville in May. Its a gathering of the chicken people. We trade , sell and enjoy chicks, eggs, plants and all sorts of stuff. I'm hosting at my property so it's nothing fancy just family oriented and fun.

Ok I think I might have found a way to get my beautiful green eggers I want. @Metella I will be happy to end up with a roo or 2 out of both batches I get from you. Have them split for mating with brown roo, blue hen and vise versa. Then separate back to one breed per coop. Ha, 3 birds one stone. Yes pun intended. :)

I wish I knew of more people in the Whitesboro area besides myself thats wants backyard chickens to be a normal thing. I got them to make an exception for two hens for me but its like walking on eggshells. If I got one complaint of the noise or smell I would be forced to get rid of them I was told. I have Little pullets but I am so stressed out about when they get older and are moved into their outside coop. They pretty much took any joy about having chickens and made it into something stressful. I think if there were more people who want them and it became a normal thing to own them that people would be more relaxed about their neighbors having them. If there is anyone who lives in the villiage that has them or wants them, I would love to make a friend and start to make this a normal thing.

Sorry you are going through that. Most people can have a nice coop of hens without neighbors even knowing. No rooster noise makers though. Hopefully, your ladies will be quiet egg layers. That's usually the louder time. Just build your coop out of something substantial and look into designs on here that don't look as "coopish"

No matter what enjoy them !!!

Thank you to everyone! I am in Southern Monroe County Honeoye falls area we are about 3 hours from you. Would love to know more about chickenstock! We pick up our chicks from the hatchery on April 8.

Welcome ...Sorry you are worried about your chicks ..there are probably more chicken folk there than you think ...
Are you in Town ? I didnt see anything in Whitesboro that said you couldnt have them ,
Hens in general are not very noisy ..they make some sound after laying ..or if a predator is around
You can do things to make them less noticable ..
A wood fence / other fence / barrier around the back yard to hide them and keep them in .
using deep litter in the coop to keep the smell down..
Fermenting their food so there is less smell to their poop

The back of my coop is fence slats

Thats what I'm hoping that no one finds out about them. I've been trying to find a fast growing plant that acts as a sound barrier. I've got six pullets from tractor supply that should all be hens but some even though they are only a week old look different then the rest. What should I be looking for in looking for signs of a rooster? They made us get six at tractor supply. I bought the coop and extension pen from them too since thy are not allowed to be free roam.

The code enforcer said you need 5 archers of laid in the village of whitesboro and town of whitestown. Yes i'm right in the heart of the village. Its a small victory of them letting me have two, but stressful knowing I know one of my neighbor would complain if she ever finds out. So now i have four other pullets since they made us buy six that I have to find out what to do with. I was thinking of making a special coop for at least the winter months in my basement to keep them in.

I wish you would have found us earlier so you could have just got your two pullets. Anyhow, it depends on the breed but if you have the same breed the roo will develop a comb earlier...he may start to make crow sounds. The necks have spiky feathers as opposed to rounded. The coloring may be different.

Chickens make a huge amount of dust and dander. If you keep them inside through the winter plan on having a house within your house and something that you can control the health of your house...like HEPA filter air etc... You may consider keeping them in your garage?

I had a small house of silkies in my back muck room last winter. They weren't a problem. I just kept them clean each week. I think that is the thing with the chickens...just keep them clean and it's not an issue.

( My sister had 3 silkies at her house in her development. She found one of the neighbors strolling another one through the backyard to look at her chickens. She has a fully fenced in yard. She sold her house and bought a farm in the country. Now, she has about 15 silkies and 50 sussex and a bunch of other incoming animals. )

Everyone has their own issues for keeping chickens...and I feel the world would be a better place if everyone had a few in their yard too!
