NY chicken lover!!!!

2 chickens died at night in the coop this past week ...found them dead in the morning One friday night.- a hatchery plymouth rock - 2 years old .. she had something going on for a while ...wanted to sleep in the nest boxes ..at night.....nothing visably wrong that I could see .acted normal other wise . one last night - she was my sweety ...Marker - -1 1/2 years old she would lightly peck me to be picked up ..and hugged & held .. She didnt want to be held yesterday ...which I thought was odd... They both had a Great Life Here !
I am so sorry to hear this. Sad for you.

Pollita,

Welcome to the group. We are only about 20 minutes from each other. I also do a great deal of organic gardening and raise quite a few chickens.

I'm under the mindset that it's easier to beg for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission. If it were me, I would probably ignore the neighbors and raise what I wanted anyways if I owned the property. I'm not familiar with your situation or town, but chances are most people wouldn't say anything, especially if you were to share a few of the eggs with the neighbors once in awhile.

On a different note, the RSL chicks I slipped under my broody BO two weeks ago are doing really well. I read that RSLs are very good foragers, but I'm beginning to believe that with the right mother hen, they will quickly learn to forage for their own food. These girls are really thriving even this early in the season and with the nightly freezing temps we have been having. I'm really looking forward to the meaties I'll be getting in a couple weeks.

I honestly want to keep them all if in fact they are all hens. I think they are sweet creatures and I plan on doing as much as I can to keep them a secret from the neighbors. The only thing that worrys me is if the are loud. i've gotten mixed reviews. When we got them I was told they were quite and read it from different people. On the other hand I've heard they are very loud. Well at least I'm pretty sure two out of three of my neighbors won't say anything. Anyone know of fast growing plants that act as a sound barrier and ways to get the hens quite?

I have 4 hens and a rooster right now, and the Roo is the loud one. My hens will start clucking every once in a while, but not very loud or for long. If it weren't for him, I don't think anyone would even realize I have them. If you have to keep them in a coop all the time, chances are no one will even know you have them around.

You won't know until they start laying who is loud and who is not. Some I never know when they lay others yell loudly a clunky chicken song and the others join in. They are nothing compared to a roo crow or a dog barking. Honestly, I would not worry about them. Get a fence. As far as quick growing and sound deadening plants what about some arborvitae?

Candled the broody's eggs tonight. All 6 I gave her are fertile and alive. But the air cells are huge! The air cell takes up 1/3 of the egg at least, if not more. Fingers crossed that her babies hatch. Did notice one when I put it back that it is either pipped or cracked, in the side of the egg though, not the air cell end.

Sorry to hear about your hens gramma. I finally got the corid today, if you can believe that

. I didn't notice any bloody poop today, and very little yesterday, so I won't even bother to use it. So it will sit there in the off chance I ever need it. Hopefully I won't. My aunt and uncle came over today to get my pallet coop started. We didn't dismantle the pallets completely, left them mostly whole. We finished the back and two sides, and they're coming again tomorrow to try to finish it. It won't be winning any awards, bc none of us have any prior experience, but as long as it keeps the chickens in, and the weather and other critters out, it will do just fine.

A warm welcome to all the newcomers!

I wonder why it is ok to keep chickens in such a big city as NYC, and so many small towns and villages ban them? That makes absolutely no sense to me. There doesn't even seem to be a limit to how many I can keep here. Though I suppose if it ever became an issue with neighbors, then they would put some rules in place, other than the 'no rooster' rule. Even with my loud rooster, and the one on the next block, no one has complained so far, I don't think. Speaking of whom, Chick has been getting progressively more aggressive towards me, since he first attacked me two weeks or so ago. Today was the worst. He came at me several times for prolonged attacks today. I finally whacked him with the broom. His days are definitely numbered. Only the thought of how my poor son would feel when he finds out that his pet has passed on, is making me hesitate and put it off. I've never killed a chicken before, and this one is humongous. I will most definitely need help. I'm not sure if I could bring myself to eat him, though. I have loads of relatives that would love to take him off my hands, once the dirty work is done. They've been commenting on it for a few months now.
