NY chicken lover!!!!

So tonight I got home and noticed one of my barred rocks on top of the fence and one of my reds in front of the coop door. I immediately thought something wasnt right because these girls are inside on their own before the sun goes down every day.i went out with a light only to find my fence once again shredded but this time by a bear. I know a bear due to the 5 gallon vegetable oil jug on the ground freshly ripped open...after my quick headcount i was deeply saddened to notice I've lost my one amber link roo

Wow a Bear ..is the veg oil drawing it ? Sorry you lost a Roo ..maybe he tried to defend the flock ?

One of our former member rented a place outside Tully and had chickens & ducks. Anyone still in contact with Lindsey?

Thank you for the information. Tully is not too far. If I can find a place there, it would be ideal.

Welcome

Thanks, neighbor . That's what I am trying to find - a house in rural area. Jordan is really close to skaneateles falls, but I don't think there's too many rental properties there. My chickens are pets, so we will whatever we can do to bring them with us. If no chance, they have to stay with my brother in law's family.

Yeah I pickup the used oil from a few different restaurants and burn it in my old diesel Mercedes, but this morning when I woke up he was just outside The door to the coop and I was very happy! It's kind of funny because I decided if I were picking one too or the other to keep he was staying.

Glad he showed up ..
Maybe find a new way to store the oil ? or take it a long way from the coop ?

Have you looked online for country rental property ? Skaneateles & S falls is a Upscale area ...Properties will be expensive
Other areas might be cheaper Jordan , Elbridge , Auburn , Senate , Weedsport , Port Byron , Marcellus , Warners , Camillus , Cato

Now a bear is hardly something one can stop if they're determined to get to your chickens.

AND, I'm glad he showed up too.

Can I assume your coop is closed at night? Though Iv'e seen pics where the bear just tore back off the coop. That was some time ago and not in NYS. I find it interesting that bears are making a come back. Not a bad thing mind you, I suppose.

Blacks while dangerous are the smaller of Blacks, browns and polar bears. Which I didn't know before going to Alaska.

150 grain Sierra sbt in 30-06 in front of 60.5 grains of rl-19 powder was my first thought but when I'm not home my only defense is a 4lb amber link and a very annoying pekin lol
