NY chicken lover!!!!

So yet another genetics question. I have rir hens and black austrolorp hens, mated to 2 gold spitzhauben and 1 silver spitzhauben roo . All eggs under my broody and in my incubator are brownish. Why do I have yellow chicks??

Can I ask why you're making this cross?
Probably from the cross, I don't know anyone on this thread that has the vast wealth of info on color genetics (maybe Pyxis has a chart/input?) that I've seen on some other threads, I don't usually pay much attention to the XYZ cross genes for color or other, all Greek to me, only one I get is the black blue splash on pure breeds, that's easy. Then there's white, dominate white, recessive white, barred, uhqe3rui1o2fhui, lost me, Lol!

How's your corny X's doing? Have any pullets, a couple maybe three, that you'd be willing to part with?

There are those on here BYC who have experience and information on genetics and crosses.

All I know is that if you cross a Red rooster to a white hen you get sex link chicks. Well if you cross a RIR or NH rooster to my Delaware hens. Cross them the other way and you won't.

I wish you well,

no reason for the cross other than those are the breeds I have and I wanted more chickens.

So this is my purpose in posting this.

Someone posted to CL a complaint about having bought sick birds. BUT didn't leave info for a reply so I posted to CL .

It is unfair to make such a posting without giving any contact information. You really should contact the seller. While I am not the poster I am a member of BYC and have seen many new chicken keepers who make some serious mistakes.

They've done no research into how to keep chickens. How to buy chickens. How to determine if chickens are healthy.

FYI, don't expect to get top of the line birds for $4 as the complaint said. Tip. If a hen has a large floppy comb she may well be older and not a pullet (hen who hasn't started laying). Production birds are called "Terminal" birds as they're laying life is limited to about 2 years. After that they may lay sporadically.

There is more to keeping chickens than buying a few birds and a bag of feed. Not all feeds are created equal. Too, some stores sell outdated feed.

If you are a person who has bought these birds please contact me or join Back Yard Chickens and see if we can't help. There are some very knowledgeable people on the forum.

I wish you well and hope you join the forum.

AND I got a reply saying some stuff, but the most important is this.

1. They said they had 20 years experience with chickens.

I would like to let you know that I was one of the individuals that bought Production Reds from the individual in Canastota. I have been raising chickens for the last 20 years, have incubated my own and raised them from chicks. I have bought chickens from the Amish, Tractor Supply and Deaton's Agway and none of them had ever been or gotten sick. I do know a healthy chicken from a sick one and I do not feed **** feed. My chickens are let out during the day to free range and are put up at night to keep them safe and they are kept clean and at least can get out and see daylight, not cooped up in a barn with no outside fresh air as the chickens I bought from the individual in Canastota keeps theirs. Granted, I should have looked closer and noticed they were sick as when I got them home I noticed white crust on their beaks and the rasping in their lungs.
Those hens are now recuperating from whatever they had, but my rooster did not. So you can say all you want about people not doing their research. My rooster died a horrible death, he could not eat, drink, and he was so weak he couldn't walk, his color in the face turned grey and his lungs were so full of crap he couldn't breathe, I contacted my vet and did everything she said to do but he just didn't make it. It is of my opinion that if people sell any living animal they should make sure it is healthy after all I wouldn't sell someone an unhealthy feeder pig. Now I have to treat the rest of my flock and hope no more die like my rooster.

I responded thus.

You are taking my posting too personal.

First, of all I don't understand how if you've been raising chickens for 20 years you could not notice sick chickens. By your own admission you have experience in buying chicks and chickens.

Second, why did you either take them back or Quarantine them? On backyardchickens we stress quarantining new birds for 30 days.

Third, my comments were not directed at you personally but meant for anyone who would read my posting. I was not accusing your of poor husbandry, though I have seen many experienced chicken keepers who continue to practice poor husbandry.

Fourth, I posted what I did because if a person is going to post a warning at least give the readers a place to go for advice if they've have purchased sick birds be it at a farm or auction or farm store. As you stated you've experience in raising chickens for 20 years.

Fifth, perhaps you'd like to join us on Backyardchickens.com and share your experience.

Take care and I wish you well,

Now back to my friends and enemies on BYC.

1. PLEASE QUARANTINE ANY NEW BIRDS YOU ARE GIVEN OR PURCHASE. KEEP THEM AWAY FROM YOUR FLOCK FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN BUT IDEALLY 30 DAYS. Even if they look fine the stress of a move can bring on underlying problems.

2. DON'T BE AFRAID TO SAY YOU'VE CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT TAKING/BUYING BIRDS. Make an excuse, "I didn't think they were this big/small" "I have to check with the spouse". " I don't have a setup to quarantine, but wanted to check them out". "I just learned I have to quarantine them and am not set up". "I'm not sure I like the breed". Whatever.

Finally my other purpose is to help new members to BYC who don't have experience but might want some. Certainly there are others here who can add to what I've said.

Take care and be well,

Rancher

Well I can give you some hatching eggs if you'd like. I have Delaware, EE's, lavender and blue hens crossed to a split roo, 50% should be lavender or blue. some frizzle hens who throw frizzles and Marans. Though I have issues with fertility.

In spite of how I come across at times I am your friend.

But of course you are free to do whatever you like. Chicken keeping should be fun right? Don't forget to post some pictures for us, okay? I always like to see pics.

thank you for the offer. I have a "surprise box" coming from cackle this week. I was just curious what my flock would give for chicks. This is hatch 3 and until now all have been black or white. This time I have 5 black and 2 red/orange. Once momma gets her big feathered tail off the babies I will get a pic. She was my nicest hen but as of late she is evil. Just giving her feeding dangerous.
