NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi there, new here and getting through my first winter with the flock.  Anybody else from the Adirondacks here?
Ventilation is the key.
I'm down in Delaware county and our Catskill Mountains are beautiful but I just love the Adirondacks. Bunch of us go up every yr mid October for the opener of rifle season. Stay at Galusha's cabins Lewey Lake. Was after good pictures this yr, trudged up Pillsbury mountain to the fire tower, man what a hike! Clear all the way up, got to the top and it started raining and fogged over..no pics. Got up there just before dark hoping to get the moon rise and sun set. Had just my bow and had to walk down out in the dark.
Saturday it was like a blizzard of snow, trees falling and branches breaking all around me. Usually in the 70s that weekend when I go up.
Use to go up camping every yr when was kids, Raquette Lake and go to Old Forge, Enchanted Forest way back when there was no water rides. I remember when they got their first water ride.
We've taken our kids up there a few times, man that place has gotten awesome!

We are about 15 hours north of Old Forge, in good weather. OF is a MUST every summer if you have kids here!

Two weeks ago we had about two feet of snow over a few days--trees down all around! That mostly melted off and now we've gotten about 8 inches so far, and more on the way. Not too cold though. Tomorrow night it goes into the single digits, and we'll have a few of those days during the following week.

We have lots of ventilation --wind makes me lower the flaps but I'd be fine with them open more without that. We have about 55-65% humidity in the coop so far. So far, Henry's comb looks just fine!

I QUIT UNTIL THE GROUND DRIES OUT!!!! 3 times this week the mud has kicked my rear. It's not safe for me out there.

On a poultry note. My evil EE boys brought out a very ugly side of a very unusual critter today. The 2 biggest EE boys were going after all the other boys in my main flock. I tried to catch those slimy brats.. Needless to say I failed. So who comes squawking and flapping from all the way across the yard?? DUCKIE MALLARD TO THE RESCUE!!! He beat the crap out of 2 EE roosters! He is one awesome Lil Duckie..

Salsss, welcome! I am also from the ADK region, Essex County right on Lake Champlain. Glad to have another ADKer!

I just lost the rooster I was worried about wintering over this year. He was a black minorca with a large single comb. He randomly disappeared yesterday. The only clue is a scuffle in the coop. Oh well, at least he was the one slated for freezer camp!

Beware ! Predators come back !

No need to heat a coop, they don't in Alaska, why would we here. Someone on here said last winter they did, never got cold all last winter. Few winters before, subzero for months and 25-30 below windchill everyone was fine, even the floppy combed B leghorns and little polish. Roosters had a little frostbite on their combs, fine once it warmed up. Hasn't been cold yet this yr, I have a bunch of naked necks and they love the snow, first one's out of the coop. Not only are their necks naked but the feathers cover up much more, they actually just have strips of feathers that cover up all the naked parts. If a half naked chicken does fine in our weather any normal chicken is in great shape with no supplemental heat.

Gramma chick- I actually have a feeling my neighbors may have come in the night anc taken him. He was a noisy fella. But I have no proof. I am getting some trail cams to put inside the coop this weekend, and eventually getting some security cams. These neighbors have no respect for private property. Their dogs are constantly in my yard, one has even attacked me in my yard. No sorry, no payment, no words exchanged at all. My chickens are kept in a run, my dog on a leash. Only reason I think it was them is because of the scuffle in coop, no tracks, and the coop is sealed tight. I don't even think a mouse could get in. And it happened at night, when they were all locked up. No proof, so I can't squel. Blah...

On a better note! My flock is loving all the soup cooking I am doing. They are getting all sorts of veggie scraps! My pooch is jealous haha!
