NY chicken lover!!!!

Welcome to BYC - was this one of those autocorrect things, and you are from Southern Tier, rather than 'Southern Their'? What kind of chickens do you have? As you can see from my recent requests for help, and many useful suggestions lately, there are lots of experienced chicken folks on here willing to help out the newer chicken keepers.
Haha yes southern teir. And yes I am already in love with this site

For any and all who live in or near Otsego County NY-
BE CAREFUL AND WATCHFUL OF YOUR FLOCK! There's a predator, named Fisher Cats that can and will demolish a flock of chickens, ducks, geese, or anything small.View attachment 1074642
I was just informed of that this morning on my way to an appointment.
We have them in Chautauqua county as well. Be warned it may be illegal to kill them as they were hunted to near extinction. Make sure to call the local authority and find out what you can do in your area

There's also "sister sites" called Backyard Herds and Sufficient Self. You can get helpful advice/tips off of those sites also and more times than I can count the advice/tips piggybacks on the info gathered from this site.
As far as I know of the only thing I'm able to do in this area is trap those doggone nasty little predators, the Fisher Cats.

Same here in Chautauqua county. Luckily I love remote enough they have not yet *knock on wood* encountered them

I also live in a remote area so far *knock on wood* I haven't encountered them either.
It's just a scary thought I could lose my flock to this animal and according to law I'm not able to do anything about it. Sometimes it's good the laws are there but then in these kind of circumstances the law stinks worse than fresh laid "fresh country air"- get my meaning.

Thank you for the heads up. I spoke to a gentlemen today 2 miles from me in deleware county. He seen 2 but they haven't attacked his flock. These weasel like animals are deadly and aggressive. I haven't seen any on my property but I'm always on the lookout. This is the one predator that troubles me the most. I hope I'm home if it visits. As stated it can take out a whole flock ,RUTHLESSLY!

Lol very true. Just remember that all creatures have a place....even the ones that threaten our livestock. Just look at the bald eagle and the wolves. I suggest research ways to deter them and rid yourself of them without killing off an entire species

Lauramay, that is true. I do my best to respect any and all animals. I just could do without worrying about when and if my flock is going to reduced and by what kind of predator. I'm already down to less than 40 hens where last year added around 48 chicks (24 BO and 24 RIR) and now only have 3 of the RIR hens remaining. Yes, I have other hens but the plan was to get rid of the older ones once the younger ones began laying so it's a good thing the older ones still lay and are pretty good layers at that.

I Hear ya cow Whisperer. I admire all life. I'll look into sites to help you to deter fisher cats of you'd like.
