NY chicken lover!!!!

Warning - This will be quite Graffic
I was out most of Saturday Came home to a dead chicken in the backyard .
She had no sign of trauma..Except her intestines where all pulled out of her .
My son said he didnt hear anything ...did see her flap some ...thought she was dust bathing. Chickens where around her some .
anyone heard of such a thing ?

Did the intestines basically blow out her cloaca? What I mean is did it look like her butt blew up? If so I have seen and heard of this tho I don’t know what causes it.
Yes kind of ...She was laying on her side and her intestines were on the ground behind her ...Her oviduct was protruding too . I think she may have had a prolapse and the rest of the chickens picked at her and picked her out

Yeah that’s kinda what it sounds like to me. Almost like a hernia and the reproductive organs came out with intestines to fallow.

1. Generally I was hatching my own, rather than fight hens wanting to sit. Too it was more work than I wanted to put in, though chicks did grow faster if I raised them. However by hatching your own, from your own birds you can weed out the weak lines. Never hatch eggs of hens who've gotten sick and recovered. It's all genetics.

2. I had a hen with prolapse but didn't notice til it was too late. I could be she had prolapse and was victim to other birds pecking at her. Chickens attack the sick and weak. Ii am sorry for your loss. Somethings aren't detectable unless you pick each bird up and examine them.

some folks like hens to lay extra large eggs but this can be dangerous to the hen. I've found that most hens DO lay extra large eggs and that some eggs I considered small were actually at the large egg scale. Because I got used to the extra large eggs, the large eggs look like smalls. Eggs remember are sold by weight, not size. A large eggs is 2oz.

Of course Golden comets and other egg producer breeds might be able to handle laying extra large/jumbo eggs.

Rainy day here in Texas but supposed to clear up by noon. Crazy thing it can rain one moment and then be hot and dry later on. OHHHHHH, thunder and lightning. Take care folks and be well. Peace

We lost power yesterday from 10:30 to 1pm. Wrapped up the incubator to hold the temp, was just lucky to be home during spring break to catch that. I did a quick candle over the weekend, looks like the shipped eggs did poorly, lots of clears. Will do a thorough candle and pull the clears for lockdown, hatching due this weekend for Easter.

Of all the times for the power to go. Good luck in recovery. Aria
