We just got our Orpingtons this spring. They are very nice. I'm sure you won't have much trouble finding some for sale on this site. Post Pics when you get them.

Oh sure like we haven't seen your type before. Orpingtons and then Ameraucanas and then Silkies and then and then and then. Your hooked that's for sure. Better invest in coops cuz it's all down hill from here and don't expect anyone here to save you. In fact everyone here will give you a big push right into chicken addiction.

I'm Rancher Hicks I just tell it like it A S is. I've got orpingtons, buffs , lavender, black, white and a splash that I though was blue, (but I will have blue). Just started but come next spring hit me up to see what's hatching if you want more. I specialize in Delawares though and am starting with Barred Rock and Columbian Rocks and have some EE's.

Welcome to my presence.

Ah, Tractor Supply. Mine has a boatload of white leghorns, and apparently they just keep a coming and a COMING!
ep.gif
So earlier this week they had last weeks leghorns marked down to .99, I ran in tonight and they had two tubs full of the day olds still, but the .99 ones had become 2.49 pullets! I suppose that is one way to unload them!

And I think the tub of Silkies would be selling better if they marked them silkies and not just assorted bantamns!

I'm sorry but I have to say this!

I would be really hesitant to buy Silkies at TSC. Hatchery silkies are --- ummmm..... looking for a nice word ---- well, let's just say they're not going to win any beauty contests. If your idea of silkie is what you've seen online, then please don't set yourself up for disappointment. Hatcheries breed for quantity, not quality. Find a breeder who breeds for quality.

Stepping off my soap-box now.

Tgrlily, I understand what you are saying. I wanted to try silkies just to see if I like them. One of my concerns is all the "hair" in their eyes. It looked like the hatchery silkies had sparser feathers on their head. My main interest is entertainment (pets), whatever eggs I get, friendly birds, and something that may want to brood.

You are right, it costs just as much to keep a poor specimen as a good one. Is it usual for someone who breeds for quality to have culls that have a flaw that prevents showing or breeding (if you are working on what you consider perfect)? I'm looking for good chickens, but not anything to show or sell.

I would like to hear your opinions/advice on where to start on getting a few birds when trying out a new breed. It's all your fault, you know

. I had no interest in silkies until I saw all the posts about what great little birds they are on here.
