I am stoked. Three down, one to go. But the last one I want to get rid of I won't GIVE away. He is an Ameruacana from Jean. Not "Jean's stock", but directly from Jean via Susan. And he is a beautiful bird....full beard, fluffy muffs, dark dark legs and wonderful comb. Haven't looked at tail angle and that other stuff, but to me he's perfect. I'll hang on to him until Spring and people are looking to replace old roos, aggressive roos or add some blue eggs to their flock.

Well my girls are laying ok considering the light thing. I do put two 60 watts in the coop and with the energy efficient kind that's not to bad. I also give them ore scratch to turn up the heat. I also make sure they have plenty of water. I'm also giving them a little bread. I got 16 today out of 30. Some are newbies. If there was a molt I missed it. Don't know what it is but they seem to move through it fast. I do give them Vitamins once a month maybe and some ACV. Which by the way is cheaper at the GNC store. I also like to mix some Cod liver oil in the scratch once in a while. My Dels laid some 2.5 oz eggs today. I'm really impressed.

Madsen - don't be jealous. It's alot of work. I have to either get free help or hire Jesse to come and clean coops. I suggest coops high enough and with a door wide enough to accomadate a wheel barrow. My run doors are just wide enough to fit my wagon so I can pull a bale of straw through.

Cute doesn't cut it with me. It's how easy is it to clean. My hoop coop us high enough I bet I can just put the wheel barrow up to the door and sweep the litter into it. Since it has a front and back door I have no problem getting in and out.

Cass - where did you get your Brahmas? I saw some on an auction and I would have bid on them if I hadn't already spent a fortune on the Birchens and the SFH's. I expect I will eventually get a line going.

Now I'm considering selling my Lavender Orp roo for the same $20 I paid for him. I've two nice blacks that I want to breed to the hens and try to get some Lavenders as nice as they are. I have no black pullets. Which is just as well.

Rancher, I just looked up the Birchen Marans. They're gorgeous - I'd be excited too! *crossing fingers that the chicks all arrive on Tuesday safe and healthy and peeping their heads off*

It was significantly quieter today without Leopold the WCBP yelling his blasted head off every five minutes. No 4 AM crowing in the coop, no crowing when let out first thing, no crowing just to hear himself crow - honestly, although I miss seeing their poofy little heads, they HAD to go for the sake of everyone's sanity. Two of the three Sussex boys do crow, but only a few times each, and then they stop and go about their business like good birds. Compared to the last couple of weeks, it's like blessed silence.

My big boy Rosco is stepping into the head roo position, which makes me happy, as that's where I've wanted him to be all along. At the moment, all the Doms and Orps (who were Leopold's women) are ignoring Rosco, other than giving him outraged shrieks and chasing him off with volleys of pecks if he pays them too much attention. To his credit, he takes the hint and backs off rather than forcing the issue, as he is a young gentleman. The other girls have no such qualms about accepting his attentions, though. He seems particularly attached to Barbie Girl, the Leghorn. He calls her for treats, follows her around, eats with her, rests with her, and dances for her when he thinks I'm not looking. If I shoot him the hairy eyeball, he immediately stops the courting and starts scratching around innocently in the leaves, like "what? I'm not doing anything!" I happened to be out cleaning the coop while she was in the nest box today. He trotted in and out of the coop the whole time she was laying. When she was done and started singing the egg song, he came running, clucked at her excitedly, then crowed while squiring her out of the coop. I find all of this hilarious, as she's only about 2/3 of his size - it's like seeing a big lout of a linebacker following around a cheerleader like a hopelessly lovesick puppy.

This is the song I would sing to my kids when I got them up for school. I didn't think much of it at the time but now they sing it to there kids. My DD in TX has sung it to her students.

At least I'm the first one up here. I've been up since a little earlier but I made coffee. It's still to dark to let the girls and boys out.

Henny - so far I'm ok with the roos but it may get outta hand. All the orps boys get along and it's always with a heavy heart I give them up. They all look so nice. Heaven knows how many roos will be in this hatch but if anyone has a mind to take one let me know. If the Birchens are fat enough they'll go in the freezer, as will this lav roo if I can't sell him. I do have takers for meat birds.

Of course eventually I'll be breeding and hatching, both.

The silence is deafening in my coop today. I don't miss the crowing, they were just too loud.

Tonight, if it is light enough I am going to clean the large coop WELL so I can move the Ameruacanas Tuesday after they go to roost. Otherwise I'll clean it Tuesday. Who needs to clean the people house for Thanksgivng? Guest can just step over the clutter, right?

Ahahaha--good one Cass! Good luck moving them over. We are moving the tractor to its winter spot on wednesday. Who gets to clean it and finish winterizing it? Me, and I get to bake and cook for the next day as well. Oh, almost forgot, somewhere in there I have to fit in butchering the deer my dh got. No rest for the weary.

My two boys were crowing this morning but they only crow for about 5 minutes and then are quiet for the rest of the day. I thought being silkies that they would have an annoying highpitched crow but its not bad. At least they are fairly quiet for roosters. My laying hens, however, are quite noisy if I am late letting them out! Nag, nag, nag in very loud voices!

Another nice day today. Too bad I have to spend it inside pushing pills for the man. The holiday spirit is here. The nashing of teeth, rudeness, demands, anger and hostility. Gotta love retail at this time of year!

Hit a bear cub on the way home from church last night.

Not sure how much damage was done to bear, it was waaay past dark-thirty and did not even see it until too late. The law enforcement officer said it pooped on my front bumper

but after finding its footprints on the road, I think it was muddy and maybe I only scraped its muddy back. It managed to run across the road in front of the car behind me and get to a semi-wooded area on the other side...hopefully it stays away from the Thruway.

Too many Roosters can be a problem. We purchased one white and one gray from a guy and they both turned out to be Roosters. That was before I found Renee. The two Roosters...did not look like TRUE Silkies. I put FREE on Craig's list and they went FAST.
