NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm with Rancher. Silkies are not real chickens, they are hatching machines. I had one go broody in the sand in the bottom of my coop, sitting on NOTHING but the nest she made in the sand. I let her hatch eggs ON THE FLOOR...she didn't care, she just sat there for 28 days (hey, didn't say they were GOOD Eggs) and got ONE chick for her efforts....poor chicky momma....

I do wish she would start laying again...Heck I wish ANYONE would start laying again....but I do miss her light tan/pinkish eggs daily. She was my most reliable layer before she went broody.

This is because she was triggered by the mother planet and they didn't know she didn't have eggs to sit on. It's a crap shoot from their perspective. They expect all silky hens to lay a bunch of eggs and then they hit the "brood button" which is connected to a micro chip in her brain. Make sure you have your tin foil hat on when you are near them. Okay?

I wore my tin foil hat when I had 5 of them....now I just have one, so I just put on a thick winter hat when I go down to the coop.

Did you know that silkie roos look EXACTLY like pullets until....well, forever.....I had 5 chicks and 4 turned out to be roos....only reason I knew they weren't hens was the crowing. I gave them away. I really don't like silkies. They never did a thing for me. And you can't eat them, they have BLACK skin. ewww....

I want blue egg layers. OR my lav Ameruacanas to start laying blue eggs, I'm not picky at this point.

Yesterday was interesting. Busy making chili for Toggenburg's Fun Day on Saturday, and had to get ready for skiing, so hurried to the pen to put the girls away. Three RIR and one BR hopped right in for a treat. One red girl and Stewpot the nonconformist BR were still out. When I grabbed Stewie I could see that she had blood on her comb. Uh oh. So I decided that she needed a vacation from the bullies, and they from her different ways. Picture me all decked out to ski with Stewie under my arm trying to unfold and set up a giant dog crate in the basement. It was kind of like Lucille Ball, but I finally got her set up, rounded up the other red girl and got to the mt. At dinner time I called home to tell DH that there was a girl in the basement. He is the sweetest man, he was actually concerned for Stewie and only a little concerned about how long she would be vacationing with us.

Today with more time I noticed another bigger scab, so put antibiotic ointment on her comb. I had been impressed about how quiet she had been, but when I was doing some work near her she started making some soft sounds, and when Bella our Newfoundland came in to spend time, her quiet vocalizations increased in frequency. Bella lay down next to the crate and stayed there for a while even after I came upstairs. Stewie continued to make some soft sounds while alone until I turned out the light.

Can anyone interpret or guide me in chicken knowledge? I have read about blue stuff to put on them to minimize more pecking, would the feed store have that? Or Tractor Supply...I figure to reintegrate her with the rest while they are outside.

Bella and she were cute.

The blue stuff I use is called Blue-Kote, I bought the pump bottle and the sprayer dosen't work for me. Cotton balls. IT STAINS! I had DD hold a hen, put it on her comb and she shook her head like a dog. DD and I had blue speckles on our faces for a few days. It was summer and we have a pool. DAYS! Rubber gloves and watch out. I would put the hen in at night and try to be out early in the am when they all wake up to keep an eye on things. Good luck!

Real men don't eat Quiche. However DW has a recipe for Spinach pie that is good if any one is interested.

got a call from Wegmans. They're recalling stuff made with eggs.

I sold all my silkies.. They were adorable (got the eggs from CJexotic on here and they were big poofy show type silkies) but just too high maintenance for me. Kept having to trim fluff so they could eat, clean poopy feet, etc.. and I never did figure out which gender they were. :p I wish I had kept the showgirl, however - s/he was cute and the guy that bought them didn't appreciate him/her.

I know that feeling. DD wanted to sell her bantam Cochin pair so we did and we regret selling Jiggly-Puff and Blue all the time. We can only hope that people will care for the birds.
