NY chicken lover!!!!

Rancher,

I have done that THREE times and I still don't get the "updates" in my email. And I have checked my spam/junk folder. So I am reduced to checking my subscriptioin listing, compulsively.

The expiration is on the box, not on the bottle....it does expire....And I'm with you about an ounce of prevention, esp when it comes to mites. Gawd, I hate those itchy things.

Hey, I found 2 of my older hens IN the nest box. Maybe they will start laying again? I mean, isn't that what hens are supposed to do? Lay eggs?
I have been resubscribing also...to no avail.....I too have taken to checking subscriptions as often as possible.......I thought my addiction was bad before........

Cass- thank you for the dosages. I will definitely give it to the cats (9lbs & 13lbs) high so they can't lick it. The smaller cat loves to catch rodents. Hence the need for bug juice on her neck. As for the birds, I suppose I will try the "random" hen pen first. The goats are Pygmy mixes. I can pick them up so I go with the 50lb rule too. Maybe tomorrow night.

I am definitely getting hatching fever. Eggs from here and there. DH just looks at me and rolls his eyes. Another spring of hatching. And DD won a incubator and turner at the Big E Poultry Congress last month courtesy of EggCartons. We have 2 Brinsea Eco 20's and a styro bator that holds 41 eggs.

Muh ha ha ha ha! Let the hatching Hyde take over.

I wish I could hatch some eggs, however the ONLY LF laying it my Olive egger and her eggs aren't fertile, yet. If my Brahma starts laying her eggs will be fertile. She's my roo's favorite girl.

Maybe my lav Amerucanas will start laying.....I can dream, can't I?

Yesterday afternoon the five girls were out in the pen, so I thought Stew could hang out in the yard with me. Pretty soon two nice red girls were out too. So I could see that not everyone hates her.

When it was time to put everyone away before going to a party, I took some advice and now have the two mean red girls in the basement. Stewie and the nicer girls are in the coop. They also all had some yummy Hoffmann hotdogs for some meat/protein treats that I had never given before. When I go shopping I will look for healthier meat for them.

As for a rooster, I have suburban type neighbors that seem fine with the girls, but probably would get huffy if their sleep or days were disturbed by crowing. Think I will address the girls poor behavior myself. After so many years in social work and education, it will just be more of the same! With the help of the fine and knowledgeable folk on this site, I bet I can solve it! (things always look hopeful in the morning.)

Stewie gave us an egg in the dog crate yesterday, so we had 5 eggs! It was a good day, except for the chicken scuffles, which really do look nasty.

The mean girls will be my guests in the basement foe a week. Next weekend we will see if they have learned their lesson.

Susan

If you want to hatch I will give you some eggs to try. BA, Chanties are my only "regular" layers at this point and we could meet up to get them to you.

I am an enabler. :D

Cass - thanks so much for the info. Honestly, I have been looking an looking for info on Ivermectin. The vet want $60 for 3 pkgs of flea/tick meds for the cats alone. Holy cow! I bought a bottle of Ivermectin for $10 at TSC. Enough to dose everyone and their "brother" for a LOOOONNNNGGGG time. This week I think I will start dosing the birds at dark while they are roosted so its easier to get them, no chasing sounds better to me. (Thanks Rancher) The box says 1mL per 22 lbs of body weight. Anyone really good at math?

Do you mind sharing the brand? I've been at TSC and haven't seen anything but horse paste wormers containing ivermectin for 10.00? Thanks!

On another note entirely, does anyone have pekins or runners they plan on hatching soon? A buddy of mine..he's addicted to ducks, well chickens too...but he loves his ducks! Please pm me or email me if you know anyone, I would so appreciate it! Thanks!

Trish

Got my girls down for a nap today, so I went down to give the horses more hay. The horses are so coated in mud I couldn't get it all off. Wet chunks of mud yuck! They like to roll in it. Well I got so caught up I forgot my muffins in the oven. Well now I have chicken treats instead of people treats.
