NY chicken lover!!!!

Newly joined from Ballston Spa, NY. near Saratoga Springs-north of Albany. Looking for local eggs to use for hatching in classroom. A hen lover from Gansevoort contacted me. Is there anybody else near me with fertile eggs for sale? Really hate to mail order. Prefer to pick up. Thanks! K.....

I'm not terribly close, but I'm in East Chatham, 25 miles south of Albany. I have , or can save for you any of the following. Jumbo White pekin duck eggs, EE eggs, Sumatra, and barnyard mix, which are either white leghorn, or RIR mixed with Sumatra.

AD - What a nice barn.

Stony - I saw a program once where there were wild chickens living on the compost pile of a town. Don't remember where. I think it's neat that you can leave yours out. How do they do in the winter? Do you lose any? The personality of breeds is why I stay away from certain breeds. I got rid of the bantam Brn leghorns cuz I would have been chasing them to kingdom come. Once they got out that would have been the end of that. I can hear my neighbors now, chickens living in the trees. I hear they complain about my roosters crowing but apparently don't mind the dog barking. Nutters! Truth is my roosters don't crow that much. I'm home most days.

Happy -

I know what you mean bout locking them up. Good garden o' peas, I've read some posts about predators where some have practically served them up on a silver platter. Around here I'd be out of business in one night. I once had a hen get out of the fenced in yard and I was out there in my bathrobe at midnight with a flash light cuz I thought I heard her. It's just who I am. But like I said I don't keep certain breeds cuz they are just to wild and can fly. I don't like unfriendly breeds. I like big and heavy.

Sounds like us, out in our pj's in the dark, with a flashlight. Lucky for me my 2 DD's always help me look.

I've gone out the door in Pj's, and crocks in the winter at 3 am with a flashlight and shotgun before. Once it was a great horned owl. He just flew away, and never saw him again. Other times I have no idea what they were complaining about. Whatever it was either left when their alarm went off ( think 50 chickens screaming as loud as they can) or it saw me and left.
one night, 10pm, right before bed they start making noise. 1 of the roosters fell out of the tree. On his way back up the tree, he knocked 4 hens off the tree. I'm out there in pj's holding a flashlight so they could see to get back up the tree.

even funnier is the day I'm out at 7am loading the outdoor wood boiler, in crocks and shorts only. It was summer, loading it for hot water. This is before chickens. I go in the house, and I NO SOONER get in the house and a black bear RUNS full bore right past where I was just standing.

Bet you were glad no one could see you from the road or they would have called 911 and had you hauled to the Funny Farm.
