NY chicken lover!!!!

Wow.

My BF and I were standing by the sliding glass door for the back yard and all of a sudden my mini schnauzer went NUTS. I look outside and the largest raccoon I have ever seen is standing by where my chickens are. We have them in a chicken tractor because our coop isn't finished yet. WELL - we're going to have to finish it tomorrow.

He grabbed his bow really quick and we see him right there plain as day. We open up the door, and he was GONE. We have no idea how he got away so quickly.

The snow is melting here, so it made it difficult to follow the tracks.

I am so amped up right now! We're going to be checking outside every minute. Of all the raccoons we've trapped - he was EASILY the largest we have ever seen.

Tomorrow - going to go buy a big trap and an air gun.
I would be pulling up a chair near the door.

That might be a good idea.

It's warm enough outside tonight that we were thinking of sitting outside in hopes he would return while we were out there being quiet.

TSC has an off brand hav a hart that is inexpensive and works well. I've caught a lot of coons and possum in it. Airgun, I don't understand??? You need a real weapon to kill a coon. Last spring, I had just put the young ducks away (ok, back in our house for the night, they weren't feathered out all the way yet) and my Sumatra's went NUTS! I look out the window and a coon is in the temp pen the ducks were just in, eating cracked corn off the ground. Inside was my 16 gauge loaded with #4's. The coon tried to leave, but 1st shot stopped it, followed by a quick 2nd shot to kill it. Coons are tough.

Ahahahaha--you funny Ginny! If the golfball hatches, I will be raising a new dimpled variety of cheep!!! Mothball! hahaha Very warm and balmy right now. Cheeps pounded out the doors early this am. Hopefully all our snow melts.

Rancher, I hope you are getting this warm spell as well. Makes it much easier on the joints...being the crazed busy guy you are right now!

Countyboy--welcome and beautiful pic of your bird! Obviously he knows it as well.

Itsy--use a shotgun or 22. Coons are tough critters and even tougher to kill. Not sure it will return during the day but watch for it late afternoon and early morning. They like to sneak in then. Glass the trees around your house as they sometimes will sleep up there during the day while waiting for a feeding opportunity at night.

Brahmapapa--I am sensing a theme here!!! lol Welcome to the enablers thread...ooops, I mean NY thread! This is the place where those of us with mores disease come to talk about it.....Morehens, morecoops, morechicks...

Okay, so obviously I am feeling somewhat better and will leave everyone alone now before I embarrass myself. Oh, more pics please! Ginny, love the new baby pic!!!
