NY chicken lover!!!!

I sold my first eggs today. WOOHOO!!! I am 3 bucks richer and she wants a couple dozen a week. Since I am getting 6 - 10 a DAY right now, it shouldn't be a problem to have the ones she wants and all the ones I want too. It does mean I am back to using 2 bantam eggs for every large egg the recipe calls for. sigh. But the money will help offset the feed costs and that is all I am looking to do.

Maybe I can talk her into taking one dozen large, one dozen small? That would be wonderful, cuz my small egg layers are my most reliable.

Woot! Congrats!! Remember when you were just waiting for little bitty eggs and that was all ya had? :p

I have two regular customers at work that buy a total of three dozen a week, plus some piecemeal people. Made a rinky dink spreadsheet so I can keep track since one of the docs will just hand me a 20 and expect me to remember how many weeks that is. Now I have documentation. :p

Thanks and I remember. Now I am back to using itty bitty eggs. Just cracked 8 of them to make a pound cake for a client. That's only 2 days worth, so I am not worried. I just wish the new ladies would lay as reliably...lucky to get 3 eggs a week from them. BUT I have 2 Astralorps (sp) and at least 2 medium egg layers in the small coop that will be laying by the End of August, early September. Not to meantion a bunch (probably 6) Sumatras just a couple weeks behind them.

I gave away 2 dozen eggs to a friend of Ray's....she had been saving me egg cartons for a few months and he couldn't see over the top of the stack of egg cartons. Did I really "give them for free"? I don't think so. She gave me probably 10 bucks worth of egg cartons to reuse. Gotta love friends that think of you even when they don't see you often.

a friend of mine just called. No one calls me at 10pm, he is a retired trooper, our son is out, so....I'm not thinking good things. He called to say his middle son just drove by our house with thier tiltbed and a MOUNTAIN LION jumped from white line to white line in front of him, onto my lawn! We have 500 feet of road frontage, so I don't know where exactly it was, but I'm not as excited as he was!
he has chickens too. And all of his live outdoors. But the reason he called is he thought I might want to see it. Ummm,no thanks! not without a loaded weapon!

Jumping from white line to white line, that is a BIG cat!

oh yeah, your not that far from me. Now they worry me when my horses are on night turn out. I have had some one I trust say he saw one in Richmond(Ma)-really not far from you. I do not want to encounter one. Maybe I should walk/ride with a loaded weapon..........

Collecting from my silkies this week so I'm in. Hoping for a good hatch.

Happy--I have glw too. Love my girls and such nice large brown eggs.

Happy--Its .05 mls on large fowl and .025 on bantys. I work where I can get small syringes with those markings and it worked great this winter when I treated my birds. Ginny did the same thing.

Okay so the weekend was a busy one. Dh and I got 3 walls framed and the fourth started before the black clouds rolled in. Figures, we put everything away and no rain. However, we are moving along which is good because the terrorists are getting antsy in their brooder box and they are only 2 weeks old! My tiny silkie chicks (or tiny yetis as someone called them) are doing well. One is very fiesty and pecks and kicks at me when I pick it up. Must be a boy!!! lol

Lynzi--do not fear what lives around you. Learn about them and learn to live with them. I grew up in the real upstate ny and the adirondacks. Bears and coyotes were not an uncommon sight as we lived in the middle of nowhere. If you educate yourself through reading and observaton of your environment and the animals you see in it, you will be much more relaxed about whats out there that you cant see. Cant tell you how many times we walked up on a bear or one came into the yard. No problems because we understood what to do and how to act around one. You will never see the yote that sees you. Same way with most animals. We humans fear that which we cannot understand or comprehend. Most problems and/or conflicts can be avoided through educating and understanding the animals we fear most.
Yup! I did. Worked well.........

Congrats! I mix my small eggs in the carton. so for every dozen I sell they usually get 2 smaller eggs (from the polish/silkies). That way I am not just keeping the smalls. I sell probably 6-7 a week now to friends. I feel like I should give a dozen to the neighbor but I buy organic feed and I am trying to offset my costs by selling them. (She likes to buy $1 a dozen from Walmart anyway)

congrats Cass. I sell all of the large/jumbo eggs and keep the Sumatra eggs for hatching, eating and 18 a week for my parents. Some weeks we eat 3 dozen Sumatra eggs ourselves. when I get seriously over run with sumatra eggs, I sell them for $2 a dozen instead of my normal $3 a dozen. But honestly that doesn't happen often. Quiche, breakfasts and egg salad keep our supply from getting too out of control.

Wow, I am selling way low. Next feed incease will cause a price increase on my eggs.

Alan, who is the household's experienced beekeeper, said you'll be good with that, as medium supers can be used as hive bodies. You start with one hive body and let them draw out some comb and add some brood. Then put a second hive body/medium super on top of that once they have a nice setup going in the first section. They'll put honey in there, but that's their "personal" supply. Just before the second level is filled, then you slap on a super - that honey pays their rent.

Why, yes, I am yelling to him in the kitchen. "So, it's one hive body, then two, then a super, right?"

Great. I will tell my DH! (As I yell to him in the other room

"Local" eggs here are HOT HOT HOT! And I am so very glad. Sold 5 dozen today, now cleaned out. Have 7 dozen hatching eggs ordered for this week and 6 dozen for next week. Plus I am hoping to be able to save for the swap on Saturday. C'mon girls!
