NY chicken lover!!!!

OH HAPPY DAY!!!!!!

As some might know, my wife is a large animal vet. She has a lot of Dairy clients, and some have found out through the grape vine that I am into Chickens. Well Today a very nice Farmer was chatting with my wife about the Birds, and casually asked with what was I hatching with. She told him a Styrofoam tabletop. He replies: Well it is older, and I haven't used it in a while, but I have a cabinet Incubator in my basement he can have.

My wife calls to ask If I am interested

When I went down and checked on my ditzy broody this morning, I lifted her up and saw a fuzzy little face and two beady little eyes looking back at me. It's a "who's your mommy?" chick ,as it was from one of the smaller light brown eggs. I think that the most likely candidate is a Dominique, as the shell color and size were about right. It's very cute - black and yellow. Go, mutt-chickie, go! At least one of the boys isn't a dud.

The other four eggs are still intact, and I didn't see any pips evident, but it's still early yet and I wasn't going to move them around for no good reason. When I let Mama go, she settled down very, very carefully, and the baby poked its head out from underneath her breast feathers, which totally made my day.

My avatar bird is also still at it, having spent the entire night in a nest box. She had claimed two eggs laid this morning, and was growling and hissing at all comers except me (she'll puff up a little bit when I touch her, but that's it). So I said "the heck with it" and gave her six of today's eggs, which she happily accepted and settled down on with that chickeny look of bliss on her face.

I went and checked on my broodies when I got home for work. The 2 banties were sharing the mothering and finishing of the rest of the eggs. 3 were out so far and 1 pipped with several more to go. The wheatan A had some hatch and left the rest of the eggs so I'm firing up the hovabator to finish the rest. In my general layer pen I have 2 hens sharing 3 babies and 1 hen sitting with close to 2 weeks left to go on her batch. I have another banty wanting to sit but we've been mean and steal her eggs.

Hello! I haven't been keeping up w/this thread in a few weeks and it looks like I missed A LOT! We've been busy hatching fuzzy butts out left and right over here! In a matter of a weekend, we went from 3 chicks to 21 thanks to 3 momma hens! Needless to say, I now have WAY too many chickies! I'll need to find homes for some. Put a post on CL for the sussex/cochin crosses as well as the EE's. They're about a week old now. I'll try to get pics up soon! They are so cute! I just love the fuzzy butts!

Also, I'm pleased to say we had a very successful duckling hatch! I had 22 eggs go into the incubator (I was an incubator virgin prior to the ducklings) and we now have 20 little ducklings! 9 Cayugas and 11 Saxonys. They are so funny to watch!

MyHennyHens - your ducklings are adorable!

This many sound like a dumb question and I'm sure I can search my question on here but everytime I do that I get overwhelmed with all the info and reading and terms I've never even heard of before. So here goes, I got my three chicks from someone in town and I'm not sure if she vaccinates her birds or not but I keep reading about mareks vaccine and NP-something testing. Will I have to get this done even with a small flock of 5-6 birds? And how do I know if my chicks have already been vaccinated unless it's not something you do until they're a little older? Probably should have looked into this a little earlier.

*Nevermind, I just read somewhere that if they were to be vaccinated it would have to be at a day old? Since I got them at 3 days old and up I wouldn't have been the one to do it. I'll have to email this woman and ask her if they are vaccinated or not just out of curiosity.

chicks do not have to be vacinated. Some people do it religiously, others say if they die, the surviving stock will be healthier than if they had been vacinated.

The NP you are referring to is a certification of being disease if you are selling chickens across state lines. NPIP certified. You do NOT have to do or be either thing to have chicks in your yard and life.

I have over 30 birds (OMG, I only wanted 5 hens and one roo) and I don't vacinate and I am not NPIP certified. (I BUY chicks, and sell eggs....if I did the reverse I would have to do things differently)
