NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi--go to the learning center and click on hatching and raising chicks. You will find all sorts of info on there including how to candle eggs and pics of each days development, which is very helpful when candling. I use it regularly when I am hatching. You can always pick up an incubator cheap on craigs list or on the everything else for sale page on here. My mistake with my first time broody and first time for me having a broody is that I didnt mark down the day she started sitting on the eggs on my calendar. I left her eggs in the coop with her and separated the area off with fencing so the others wouldnt bother her or the eggs or the chicks. Yes, you should always remove the infertile eggs as they will rot and explode if you dont and that ruins the rest of them. I candled at 7 and 14 days and again around the time I thought they should hatch. I was off by a week (hence the need to mark on a calendar!). I hope this helps.
Thanks! I will go take a look now...

Lynzi, the Ag Center in Tully has feed and stuff like feeders and waterers. I bought a huge bag of game bird feed, because it has high protein and is not medicated for $16.00. Since everyone is finally ranging around together all the big birds still prefer the chicks high protein food, so I will put them both out. Unfortunately it is pellet, so I have to smoosh some of it for the littles. If it's not one thing, it's another.

Adm and VM.... thanks for the info! I'd be glad to see photos of the chicks as they get older. I'm like a 7 year old kid with all of these chicks. One more of the leghorn egg hatched and another is pipping. I should check the combs on mine....

sorry I have not been on here, I have been really sick since sat.

lynzi, I think you were the one who asked about the fish tank incubator?? I can't think right now who did, but all you have to do is put the 250 watt heat lamp 18 inchs high over the tank and thats it!!! I will get the pics for you soon, sorry!!!

Well my vacation went by in a flash. I had family up from Florida. There was a family function the last 4 days. My main garden is planted, now I just have to get creative where to plant my sqaush on the property. My youngest didn't want to fall asleep last night and now I'm beat! I haven't kept up on the thread I've been so busy.
I am going to plant my sqaush in old tires. I herd that it keeps the sqaush bugs away for some reason so I am going to try this!!!
Hey guys! Man, I've been neglecting BYC! I haven't been in this thread since we were on page 980-something.

Hope you are all having a wonderful spring!

I have eggs hatching as I type this....a really messed up (but is doing surprisingly well hatch) of both Coturnix Quail and Easter Eggers. In the beginning of the hatch, I had the temps too low... so I increased them and it threw off my hatch dates. The cots were going...and then I had to open it, and then more cots hatched...and I had to open it...then a chicken...then a day later one more chicken...then a day later two more chickens and more cots. So the bator has been open and shut and open and shut. I have two more chickens hatching now and I hope they're ok.

The other chicks look GREAT. I have a stunning EE roo and I can't wait to see what these chicks grow up to be. The one that was crossed with him and my Leghorn made a white chick. I'm curious to see if that makes me a white EE. The chick that popped out of an EE egg is the fuzziest most bear like chick I have ever seen anywhere. Ahh fun times! :) If anyone would like EE chicks or Coturnix in the future, send me a PM and maybe we could work out some sort of barter. I'm always interested in Bee products like honey or wax. Or if any of you folks live local enough...maybe veggies for chicks? Just thought I'd throw that out there for some locals.

Anyone also hatching right now??
don't you have a gold duckwing roo?? where are you???
Just came across this website online (I'm sure some have already seen it) and LOVE IT! Lots of great info, I'm reading up on goats, I would love to have some but that'd be pushing it with my landlord! LOL

I forget how many javas you said you hatched out but it looks like you have 1 male and 3 hens if all 4 black chicks around the hen are javas!!! I am surprised to see how black the legs are, so it looks like you may have black javas instead of mottle javas after all!!!!

Java, so sorry to hear that you have been sick. Hopefully, your immune system has had a good work out and you will feel great for a good long while!

Life is still hectic for me. My oldests' last day of school was today and I have to have her back for closing program at 6:15. Everyday seems to have something going on and then I try to go to bed early because I'm wupped. Oh weekend I look forward to you!

Java-- I was thinking of tires for squash too. Waiting for DH to cut off some side walls of a few so I can flip them inside out (so they look more like planters).

Ginny-- I was just curious if you were going to keep the chick that looked similar to my avatar. We don't really need any back, chicks coming out our ears.

Of course, but they wouldn't be pure - I am too lazy to build more pens and try to get pure eggs so I just get barnyard mixes. :) I think they do look mottled, but we'll see as they get older. If you still want a java roo let me know - I think I want to keep either the NN roo or the favorelle. Or maybe both, depending on how my main roo takes it. :)

I have to share these pictures with you guys, cuz they are just too cute NOT to share. My sister sent me these photos from CT. My mom is huge into gardening and flowers, and loves bird houses! Ever spring she plants the most beautiful, unusual flowers all around her house, all over the deck, etc. Well she has all sorts of neat planters too, most of them country/antique looking. Well my sister sent me the first photo last week of these 4 robin eggs. A robin a had made a nest in one of my mom's planters! Which is weird, because it's not covered or anything. Well today she sent me another of two of the eggs that had hatched! Soooo cute!
