NY chicken lover!!!!

Waiting for pullets to lay is like waiting for jello to get firm. They will lay when they are ready and not before. Roos dont really affect laying at this age. You probably have more time to wait than what you think. Your boys will sound funny and awful until they get their big boy voices. Mine sound like someone is squeezing them. However, be careful what you wish for cause they can be loud and proud! lol.
I call it the Kazoo crow. I have 1 doing it every morning competing with the big boys

Hi ya'll,

I just found this thread and thought it would be fun to chat with some folks nearby.

My EE boy crows at all hours during the day....the hens surround him like he is a little chicken rock star! so funny that he has groupies.

*waves at Adoravachick* Welcome to the NYS thread! There are quite a few of us in the Capital District.

Since I keep forgetting to bring the camera outdoors in the daytime, I brought it down to the coop tonight and used the "nighttime mode" to get a flash photo of the duckehs. No questions now as to who's a boy and who's a girl! Most of the hens were busy quacking under the chickens' roosts. The guys like to pile up in the corner, though, so I managed to get all four of them.

Thank you!! I've had my chickies for about 5-6 months now and it's been an adventure so far! The only bad thing is that, out of the 9 we have right now, I'm guessing that 6 are males. :( Does anyone know if having so many roos will keep my hens from laying? A neighbor suggested that might be the case as to why I'm not getting any eggs yet, although I'm still thinking that I shouldn't expect any until next month anyway. Also, none of the roos are crowing yet! I think I might have heard one put out an attempt, but it was awful and only happened the one time weeks ago. I want to hear my boys sing!
I hate to say this but having 6 roos and 3 hens is not good for the hens! my uncle had the same amount of roos and hens and the hens were NOT happy at all. all of the roos made the poor hens backs bare and just plain wore the hens out! you really need 4-7 hens per roo if you have this many roos, or just keep 2 roos.

Sun, With 6 cockerels and 3 pullets, you may want to remove all but one cockerel. It could stress your pullets if the cockerels spend a lot of time trying to copulate with them and the pullets spend their days being pestered constantly by the boys. I really depends on how randy your bunch is. If everyone is getting along, I wouldn't bother separating them.

Nice pictures!!! I count 5 birds.....did you mean 4 boys?

Morning all!

Stony--you hit the nail on the head! My boys do sound like they are making a kazoo sound! Its hilarious to listen to because they answer my silkie roo and they are no match for him right now. So far they have been fairly quiet...only crowing in the morning for a minute or so and if they see me outside and want attention. I hope it stays that way.

Hen--nice pics. Mrs. Beasley looks very annoyed with you. I guess you were disurbing her rest! Or she was just really uncomfortable!

Ginny--good point about the cockerals. Mine arent randy yet so I wasnt thinking about it and Little Man does his thing on the dl so I dont notice it either.

The waiting game is killing me and I am praying hard to the incubator gods. No pips yet. Temp and humidity is holding. Guess I will busy myself with domesticated stuff and outdoor stuff so I am not looking in the bator every 5 minutes. Nice having 2 days off in a row. Went and saw Brave at the movies yesterday with my 21 year old dd. If you have kids, go see it. It was a good movie.
