NY chicken lover!!!!

All the Sumantras are out in their nifty little box house. I let them out every morning and put them all in every night. I am hoping they get the idea that that is where they are supposed to go to get out of the wind in bad weather. Right now I am going down after dark and putting them back in the box. I now know what it would sound like if something was to try and kill one of them, cuz they make a huge racket when I pluck them off their roosting spot and move them to the box.

*waves at Adoravachick* Welcome to the NYS thread! There are quite a few of us in the Capital District.

Since I keep forgetting to bring the camera outdoors in the daytime, I brought it down to the coop tonight and used the "nighttime mode" to get a flash photo of the duckehs. No questions now as to who's a boy and who's a girl! Most of the hens were busy quacking under the chickens' roosts. The guys like to pile up in the corner, though, so I managed to get all four of them.

love the duckehs! I call mine duckers, or the runners once in a while Runner Duckers

. They are really good looking ducks. Darn it, now I want more ducks.

I've been so busy I can barely get a chance to read the thread. I thought I was going to have a weekend at home, but then had a birthday party thrown at us. Guilted into going since it's family. I've got so much barn cleaning and yard work to do. It's frustrating. I want to make everyone happy and get all my stuff done. I just keep telling myself work faster and harder and compromise when possible.
On a positive note I am looking forward to August when I get to meet a lot of great chicken people at my get together. It is going to be fun!

Me too!!!! I have so much crap to do. In addition to regular beginning of summer stuff, my son graduated from HS(so we had a big party), spent the mornig running around getting his new car registered(in my name so he gets a better insurance at a better price) And don't forget my daughter is getting married in August. Spent a night last week making a 100 little strawberry/rhubarb jams for wedding party favors.......My niece just announced that she is getting married the Sunday of our get together....It is her third and I am going to our get together!!!

I would so like to be bored.(Just for a few days.....)

Hey everyone I'm still alive.

Updates.

Sold the SFH's. Had to chose between them and the Birchen Marans. Which by the way are not up to par with Green Fires. None of the hens has silver on the hackles like they should. It will be a cold day before I order chicks from a so called breeder. So far only Kathinmo's BR's have lived up to the hype. They are very nice but they are all trying to go broody.

The other day there were three hens in the corner all trying to sit on one egg! I've plans to make a broody set up but Lord I'm tired and want to get thing done and settled. I plan to cordon off part of the hoop so they can't be accessed by laying hens. That has been a problem. Hens adding to the lot of the broody. What a night mare I had. Tossing eggs not fertile and dead chicks. Ugh! You would think I'd know better by now.

Stony - the ALBC newsletter had some interesting things to say about ducks. For me specifically that they can lay as many eggs per annum as chickens. What interests me is they don't crow. I' ve 7 roosters here.

Nearly finished with a new half hoop coop. Pics added.

To many broody hens and they are driving me nuts. I've plans to go away and don't want to leave DW to deal with chicks. I've got one hen with two now. Those will be given away soon I expect.

Garden is nearly in though not completely fenced in and the chickens are driving me crazy. The BR's are loose in the back yard and getting into trouble wandering around. Today they went down along the fence into the neighbors yard. They also wander into the woods. They're not easy to see since the weeds are so high.

Well take care and enjoy the summer,

Rancher

Rancher glad to know you're still kicking. Hope your trip goes well and your summer too.

Ginny-- Just wait there will be even more things going on or that you'll have to do the closer to the wedding you get. At my house just keeping up with maintenance of house and barn around the family functions plus adding in 2 little girls to the equation keeps me on my toes. I've come to believe my laundry basket is bottomless. Just got done shoveling out the horse area of the barn, collecting eggs, and hanging out laundry.

glad to "hear" from you again Rancher. I've said it before and I'll say it again, don't tell my chickens but I think I prefer my ducks

. Before our runner Penelope went broody she laid nearly every day. The Pekins lay really well too. And the eggs are HUGE from both and very delicious. There isn't a pecking order, they accept new ducks with open wings, they don't even care that chickens exist and co mingle with them fine. LOVE my duckers. If you are going to get ducks make sure you do your research and get a good egg layer. Pekins lay well, but eat like pigs. My guess is the feed to egg ratio is much better with my runners (well once she and her young lady's start laying and she starts again) than with my Pekins.
