Good morning! I just got my game cam and look what I found on it this morning!

I was feeding our animals and over in the field behind the coops and pens was the buck I hunted last year. I know it was him because he only has half an ear. He's a big 9 point currently. I was so excited I forgot I was doing my chores and went back to the house after he left and never finished them. I finally realized I forgot about them. He is huge this year.

I have a pvc feeder for my coops and it works best with pellets or crumbles. If you are getting pullets or hens(or even chicks) find out from the seller what brand of food they are on and contnue with that. As with any animal, if you decide to change the food source, you must add it gradually to the existing food until they are on the new food completely. A sudden change in diet can be very disruptive to their digestive system. Letting them into your veggie garden when you are done harvesting is a great idea. They will till the soil for you, eat any bugs in there and help turn over and fertilize stuff for you. The general rule about giving chickens stuff is that if you wouldnt eat it, they shouldnt either. Definately no rotted tomatoes. Anything with mold or black spots is a potential health hazard and can kill chickens. I have never fed mash but when I feed an oatmeal mixture, I pick up the dish as soon as they are full, even if its not all gone. Spoiled food can also kill.

Keep those questions coming and we will answer them to the best of our knowledge. Make sure you pick your friends brain and see how she raises her cheeps. May I suggest a good book I am reading call The Small-Scale Poultry Flock by Harvey Ussery. He writes about everything you will ever need to know about keeping chickens and he has been doing it for over 30 years. Worth every dollar.

Well I agree with most of this advice except for perhaps two things.

1. Chickens will eat slugs, snails and spinach. I don't eat any of these things. Oh and mushrooms on pizza.

2. I've read every book I can get from the library and there is some conflicting information. If you decide to follow one authors advice then stick with the one, otherwise you'll just get confused. You just do the best you can and develop your own system and what works for you. Harvey writes for a lot of the periodicals so I do think he is very good, but save your money and use your local public library first before you buy.

Pharm, hope your healing nicely. I would have sent you a get well card but don't have an address and I don't know how to send those E-card thingies.

I am just west of Albany. Looks like you're quite far. Bummer!! Sounds like this would have been perfect!!! :(

Rancher--I am healing well and the internal bruising is going away slowly. Thanks for the sentiment and save your dollars. I take it you dont like mushrooms on pizza??? lol Anyways, I rarely have time to read because of my crazy work schedule but with the surgery I have been devouring books like crazy. I have 14 of them that were free downloads from cornell on poultry (read them all) and picked up Usserys book along with another one(bought). As a history teacher, we are taught to disect everything we read to get to what the author wants us to believe. I fully understand where Ussery is coming from generally take what I think might work for me and try applying it. If I had more time, I would live at the library like I used to , reading everything I can get my hands on. Sigh, there was a time when I would read 30 books a week and my mother also. Anyways, I digress. I hope the eggs in the stewpot thing works. You will have to let men know.

Countyboy--sounds like you had a case of buck fever. There is no cure. I know.

So my 16 week old pullets have begun to lay. At least one or two of them. I found an egg yesterday on the floor in the corner of the coop so Dh finished putting the hardware on the nest box doors and took down the cardboard that was closing them off. Threw in some litter last night. Heard the egg song this morning and he saw one of the rir girls in the box, singing her song. Sure enough, there was an egg when he opened the door. He finished putting the backstops on the rear of the boxes and the frontstops to keep the litter in. I dont know if this is a good thing or not at this age but when you look at this pullet, she is a little bigger than her sisters and has quite the headgear that is quite red. Visual inspection of the two eggs looks good. They are the size of my silkie eggs but the coloring is nice and the shell is smooth. Hmmm....maybe I should show it to the hens as they have slowed down as of late and let them know their replacements have begun production.....and winter is coming....and what downsizing means to them..

Once again the weathermen were wrong and all we got was little to nothing. I hope all of you who need rain got some.
