Sigh... would anyone like TWO free drakes? They're sweet with chickens and lady ducks, just not males. I had separated out the main bully until he gets a new home and found my pekin male bullying the other guys in his place. So they need a new home together.

Any chance you would be able to come to our chicken event later this month (well the end of august anyway)? I have the link in my sig line. You may be able to car pool too!

Experimented with turning out the two banned EE roos with the main flock yesterday. They instantly went after the girls and were unrelenting. Seen more bodily fluids than necessary from the undersexed Mahogany. Grabbing the girls put the other roos on alert and were trying to pull the little rapists off of them. (Bonus points for the GLW boys, but they are still going) Caught them both and back into Eglu isolation again. That confirmed that those 2 are not fit for the flock. The one has crooked toes anyways, but dissappointed that both of them with fuzz faces are the ones to go. The 3rd EE roo goes after the girls, but will stop when they run away. He doesn't have any beard or muffs, but nice coloring with black breast and red back. So the list of freezer vs keep is made, now to just wait for them to be big enough and to find someone to process.

Morning all. Getting more rain again. I have gone from having chicken french fries to needing a bailer and twine for my yard. The cheeps are loving it though. I know some chickens can be very people friendly but I find it disconcerting that two of my sexlinks walked up my front porch and knocked on my front door. When I opened the door they looked at me and would have walked in if I hadnt nudged them away with my foot. Needless to say, I had to pick them up (they chatted the whole time) and return them to the back yard with the rest of the flock. I call them tweedledee and tweedledum. These two are better than bloodhounds when it comes to tracking me down.

Gave the hens and silkies their followup applications of ivermectin yesterday. The hens were not happy but liberal use of grapes seemed to soothe the soul. I did notice that they have put on weight since the first application and Mean Marge was feeling pretty light. She is filled out now and looks much better. I am glad I gave in and chose to do this after much thought.

I have a broody silkie hen again and man is she crabby! Amazing how the littles ones are always the fiercest ones. Too bad though. No more hatching this year! I still have a lone chick downstairs that no one will accept yet. The boys were mean to her (I am hoping its a her but with silkies who really knows) so I had to remove her from their coop. I will be putting Sam up for sale, if anyone is interested. He is a nice blue silkie, 5 toes, good boy from Obsessively Silkies. He is just too dark for my project pen. Pm me if anyone is interested.

I have one I call lil pretty girl who is like that. She is a RIR mutt of some sort and is very friendly. EVERY time I walk outside she runs up. Anytime ANYONE walks in the yard she runs to them.

She is also quite the ham, and deserving of her name! And a rooster favorite as you can see

I set eggs to hatch the day I got back from Vacation. I am back and 2 chicks so far. But the momma keeps pecking them. Not sure what her problem is, but it does seem to be she can't tolerate squirmy things under her. Maybe once they all hatch she'll calm down. Sure hope some of them are still alive by then. I don't seem to have good luck with slipping chicks under hens at night, so I can't pull them out and put them back with any degree of success....maybe a blanket over the area so she is in the dark?


PS, you guys filled up the internet while I was gone. It's going to take me a while to catch up on all the goings on.

Just a heads up, was just at walmart and they finally marked down the 1.5 gallon heated water bowls, which had been sitting on the clearance rack for the full price of $20. Now they are $5!! I bought four of em, can always use those and $5 is a steal.

Hey Everyone,
Finally been getting some much needed rain the past couple of days! Not sure if it's going to help my lawn any but hey, it's something. Question for you all, whats the longest you've ever left your chickens if you had to travel? We taking the kids to Disney 3rd week in August and I'm wondering what I should do. I know I could leave them with enough food and water and they'd be fine. But they free range all day. We let them out around 8 in the morning and don't lock them up in the coop until about dusk, or whenever they wander on in themselves and we notice it and shut them in then rather than have to coax them in there ourselves. I'm wondering if they'd be ok in the coop for the days we'll be gone or if I should have my neighbor come by and let them before work and get them locked up in the evening. It's just that we just moved here and I really don't want to be asking for favors this early on, I'm sure she'd do it in a heartbeat, I mean she has about 30 chickens of her own she already has to let out and back in every day, but I don't know. I think 4 days would be a long time for them to have to be in the coop. What do you think?

I would pay her to do so, and/or let her keep any eggs she collects while your away. This is what I did.

Which Walmart? I need some of those. At least 2, three would be better.

The broody hen is the lighter of the two. Is that the one that was broody before? She has stopped pecking them....perhaps it was the stress of the other chickens looking in? I put up some wire around her so they couldn't stand on the side of her box and intimidate her. Of course I was looking in on her too....that's how I know she was pecking at them. I am hoping that a few more hatch overnight tonight.....but she won't let me check for cracked shells, so she must be getting uncomfortable with sharp shell halves and squirmy chicks all under her.
