Speaking of kittys, I'm going to bring some home from my parents today. My uncle owns the family farm across from my parents and people dump off cats there. One of them had kittens and my uncle can't afford treatment for all the cats. I figured to clean up the kittens, get them fixed, and find them homes.

Sorry to hear about Pickle. It must have been a comfort to him to pass in your arms, but hard for you.

Rancher, do you really need a BR roo? Maybe the BR girls could manage on their own for a short time, then you wouldn't have to worry so much while you are gone.

Pharm, I am imagining you rushing around in the frosty morning. I was out at almost dawn myself in my fleecy pjs, and then drinking my coffee smugly, still in the pjs. My peace was shattered when my son, his girlfriend, and then my other son arrived...they were meeting up to head to Troy for cyclocross. Busted.

But it's a beautiful day.

Does anyone know if it would be beneficial to section off part of the chicken pen and put lime on it? Seems like it might help to neutralize the soil, maybe keep some of the bad bacteria down? I could keep it so the chickens couldn't be on it for about two weeks?? Would this be worth doing?

As for your uncle he might try the CNY Cat coalition. They help folks get feral cats spayed and neutered. 289 - 2287. Lord knows there are to many cats and dogs in the world. They may be able to help him with his drop offs.

Glass - Yes I do need him. He's irreplaceable since he came from Kathy in MO and his line goes way back. I foolishly kept him since he matured first and sent the other two , to the auction. I didn't want to hatch BR's this year since I had BM and Swedish flower hens coming up. Also my primary hatching is Dels and the BR's just started laying this spring.

I guess he needs to behave himself then. The BRs seem like such smart birds, maybe he can learn to be more appropriate. He probably thinks he is appropriate, but if it keeps on causing himself any you and your wife grief, he needs to smarten up!

I believe in pasture rotation!!! I am able to do it with both my horses and chickens. I use lime in my stalls sometimes( I prefer sweet PDZ), then my chickens will pick though the manure pile and they still seem in good health. Pasture rotation allows for internal parasites to die on their own accord and the environment to come back. Yes I say do it! Hopefully others will have opinions and give them voice! I do not not know if 2 weeks is enough but it certainly would not hurt.

I've given up on raking my yard, it's just too big, I need someone to come blow all the leaves into the woods for me. Plus my friend called and distracted me with this adorable picture of a chicken I did not know even existed! If I ever add anymore to my flock, this will be next purchase, a Polish Frizzle. How cute are these things! (Rancher, I can't wait to hear your remarks. LOL) I'm not a big fan of the Polish, but when she showes me this first picture she found on Google, I had to come in and check them out online myself.

I've given up on raking my yard, it's just too big, I need someone to come blow all the leaves into the woods for me. Plus my friend called and distracted me with this adorable picture of a chicken I did not know even existed! If I ever add anymore to my flock, this will be next purchase, a Polish Frizzle. How cute are these things! (Rancher, I can't wait to hear your remarks. LOL) I'm not a big fan of the Polish, but when she showes me this first picture she found on Google, I had to come in and check them out online myself.

I put all my leaves in a big pile. In the spring I will move the chicken pasture to include the leaf pile. The chickens will be very happy!! All those bugs that over winter in it will be gobbled up by your feathered friends! And my leaf pile?.........fertilizer for the area the chickens have scratched!!

I have 4 big piles in my yard right now, one is up by the coop - maybe I'll leave that one there and have them go at it in the spring time when I get rid of it. I did the whole bit with using leaves in the orps coop, it turned out to be such a mess! The silkies were fine, but I don't know what happened with the orp's coop. Attracted so many flies, and every seem so yucky and muddy. Ugh, maybe they tipped over there water or something. It was gross. They're back to shavings.

Must of been feeding that chicken gun powder, it's feathers grew out in Bangs! Looks like it sneezed and someone held it's beak shut.
