NY chicken lover!!!!

Must of been feeding that chicken gun powder, it's feathers grew out in Bangs! Looks like it sneezed and someone held it's beak shut.

you're b-a-a-d rancher!!!but funny!

I threw tons of leaves in the runs today.. Gives them something to do when I am at work!! =) Since I had an extra charger, added a hot wire to the coop that the dogs were bothering today. That coop is my fort knox coop, but it never hurts to add a little more protection!

But it's a beautiful day.
Does anyone know if it would be beneficial to section off part of the chicken pen and put lime on it? Seems like it might help to neutralize the soil, maybe keep some of the bad bacteria down? I could keep it so the chickens couldn't be on it for about two weeks?? Would this be worth doing?

We always tossed down hydrated lime in the calf pens between cleanings, especially in summer when maggots were a problem and also if a calf became sick before the next one moved in. Sunshine and fresh dry air also help kill of the nasty bugs, but we won't be seeing any of that this time of year. I am also a rotational pasture believer and rotate my three horses. It gives the grass time to regrow and parasites die off somewhat. The lime would be beneficial to the soil, but again not much this time of year. If you got the space to do it, plan for the spring time to start a rotation plan. Graze an area, then move them to another area and spread the lime in the first one. 2 weeks may be too soon for the grass benefit, longer would be better, but do what you can. Lime shouldn't hurt the chickens, as long as it rained to soak it in. Calves used to lick or scrape their teeth on the whitewashed walls, which is nothing but lime anyways.

I've given up on raking my yard, it's just too big, I need someone to come blow all the leaves into the woods for me. Plus my friend called and distracted me with this adorable picture of a chicken I did not know even existed! If I ever add anymore to my flock, this will be next purchase, a Polish Frizzle. How cute are these things! (Rancher, I can't wait to hear your remarks. LOL) I'm not a big fan of the Polish, but when she showes me this first picture she found on Google, I had to come in and check them out online myself.

1st one is cute ! kind of like a chicken pine cone ! LOL We do the mulch & mow with our leaves ..with our lawn mover . Start a the opposite side of the woods . mow with the blower towards the woods ...you will eventually get all the leaves there

I WANT ONE!!! Just one though. They are hard to find, I have been looking.

I need some advice. I have a 3 week old chick that went to a new home today. The chick was in a closed box in a car more the majority of the day. The girl got the chick home and the chick is lethargic. Is there anything that she can do to keep from losing the chick? From what she told me, the chick is under a heat lamp, eating and drinking a little, and taking eletrolytes. Is there anything else that she can do?

I am not the person to ask but today I was told to give my little ones hard boiled egg mashed up to help them recover from the stress of shipping....I lost two in a shipment this week (one DOA one in the next ten hrs). No losses since thank goodness. I was also told to put sugar in water if not using electrolyte water.
