NY chicken lover!!!!

Love to hear about neighbors helping neighbors... it's the way life SHOULD be.
It was chilly this morning and cold enough to snow very lightly off and on today. The chickens seemed to have cared less. Even the 16 weekers, who grew up in the garage!
Our original black australorp laid her first egg today! We got her the same time as the BO that laid her first egg 2 days ago. Seems like they took forever. We were told they were 4 months when we got them and we've had them 3 or 4 months. As "Blackie" was in her lay box today she actually GROWLED at me. Speaking of which, is it normal for a hen to completely change personality? When we got them, Blackie was so scared to join the flock she would literally jump into my lap or fly to my shoulder. She couldn't get close enough to me and loved to be held. Now, she HATES to be held and will fight to get away. She will run from us when we get near. Does this happen often?
congratulations on those first eggs! as far as my experience, which albeit, is limited... my chickens kind of figured out that they were chickens when they started laying... the super tame and sweet ones became a little more distant ~ still very personable, but not so much "lap" chickens anymore, and the grumpy ones who wouldn't let me get too close became much more friendly, but not "lap" friendly... as long as I can be in close proximity ~ inches away ~ without them getting jumpy, I'm cool... if I need to get ahold of one, it's pretty easy, they trust me, and know that I'm not into forcing them to do non-chicken things, like being held if they're not into it... now I only have the little bantam that flies up to my shoulder or sits on my lap on a regular basis.
my oldest roo, who likes to mill about very close to me and gives me great curious eye, and stink eye... gave me a small kick this afternoon. first time ever. i was so surprised, but i caught his feet mid kick and swung him upside down in a split second. now it was his turn to be surprised! I held him upside down for maybe 30 seconds, then flipped him up and held him and looked in his eyes... took one second for him to try to kick me again, no doubt to get away, so upside down he went again! this time i carried him around the yard for a couple of minutes. his harem was under the big pine taking a bath, so they didn't witness his humiliation. his behavior was much improved after that, and he still came very close to me. I'm glad. I don't want him to avoid me. but i won't tolerate a mean roo. he's 7 months old +, I'm fairly certain that it will be ok, even if he needs another reminder. but i also don't mind using the crock pot method of permanent correction.

It's kind of funny, but my friendliest hens right now are my production hens, which I got from a local chicken farmer.
I just don't have the heart to crockpot any of my chickens. Don't think I ever will. If I see body parts "in use" I can't eat them.

Our top roo acts very similar. He's a perfect roo behaviorally. Once in awhile he gives me the stink eye and I give it right back. I'll move closer to him and look bigger than him. He'll shuffle away and go talk to a hen. I'm waiting for the day, though, that he takes a stand and kicks or something. He's about 7 months old, too. I'm definitely breeding him because he's so handsome, he's large and he's been a perfect gentleman so far.

Morning all! About 20 here this morning. Getting up the gumption to go let everyone out. They are finally awake and Olaf is sounding off that he wants out.

Cheeka and Chick---your roos are at the right age to start challenging you. Olaf (my rir roo) challenged me last week and flogged me. My boot connected with him and then I chased him all over the yard with the rake. I cornered him in the coop the next day and caught him with a net. Pinned him to the floor like a dominate roo would. Did it twice before letting him go. He avoids me now. I wont tolerate a mean roo. His brother Hane made a try from the other side of the fence when I went by the run so now I have to do the same to him as well. I find roos need a reminder every now and then as to who is the supreme ruler. I did not talk when I corrected Olaf nor did I do anything in anger, just quietness. I also told them that they are tasty and could go to freezer camp like their brothers! I would hate to have to do so as they are magnificent specimens of their breed and I want to use them for breeding. They are also good roos, watch over the girls well, find food for them, etc.

Long week this week working. Have to load everyone up with food and water. Hope the eggs dont freeze as no one will be home during the day to get them. Everyone have a nice day.

I had to break ice out of the outside water bowls this morning. Bleargh.

It's time for the freezer camp candidates to go, as they're starting to bother the girls. Fortunately, Papa Captain Morgan and his self-appointed second-in-command are intervening, and the older hens refuse to put up with their nonsense. One of the boys made the mistake of trying to jump my pet BLRW and got roundly pecked for his troubles - she actually ended up with a couple of feathers in her beak. If the weather is decent I'll do it this Saturday, I think, as Alan will be around to help me, and I want to do three.

I got home from getting the girls and voting this afternoon to find my favorite bird Snuggles dead in the yard. I didn't see any marks on her. I don't even know how she got out. My bantams were all penned up and it's been 2 days since they had been let out for supervised time out. I haven't been letting them out as often as the large fowl because everything seems to think they'll make a nice snack.

Oh no Tab, I'm so sorry to hear that!

So is it mean that I'm keeping my Roo in the coop while the hens free range today? I think he's pretty mad about it. He's going crazy in the coop. I even tried to reach into the nest boxes to grab the two eggs that were in there and he tried escaping that way, so I had to slam it down fast before he got out.

I had to break ice out of water buckets THIS AFTERNOON on the shady side of the barn....
