NY chicken lover!!!!

Just got an email from AJ farms hatchery in Seneca Falls, where I thought I bought some Buff Orpingtons last February. Those are the ones that turned out to be red sex links...I asked them to not send any more emails, since I only get angry when I see mail from them. I even called and asked them if they were sure that those were BO that they sold me. They gave me some mumbo jumbo that it was just genetics...they had a chance to be standup people, and they blew it as far as I am concerned. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I won't be getting anything from them anytime soon, as it probably won't be what I would have wanted.

Just checked the mirror, and Yes, I am frothing at the mouth.
I really hate when people won't admit their mistakes. And I don't do business with them.

Some birds do molt at 7-9 months of age. I had a few of my January birds go through a molt already about a month or two ago. It's not a FULL molt tho, at least not with mine. They just look scraggly for a while, then back to normal. :p
Birds will go through that scraggily semi molt at that age if the timing is right, but full out molts don't happen until the fall when they are a year or older. When I hatch in the fall, those birds do that semi molt around May.

Hello All!
Finally some warmer weather. Everyone is out free ranging and loving it. The two orpington hens keep their distance from the silkies because my silkie too likes to protect them, but doesn't show any real aggression. Just kind of squawks about when they get close. He's so funny. I think he knows he's no match for them being so much smaller.

My bigger roo is still confined in his run. Not sure what I'm going to do with him. But he just cannot be let out. And there is no real way of knowing if he's going to attack again or not so ...

I do have to say what's weird is, the minute I confined him, I started getting two eggs a day again from my two orps! Is that odd?? I couldn't believe it when I went up to the nest box and there were two brown eggs, and have been two a day for about a week now. I guess they're happy!

I thought about getting chicks from them because they are close enough I could have drove to pick them up, but I've not heard very good things about them.

Somehow I lost this thread. Hmmm.

Glad everyone is doing well.

Had my first hawk attack. Now I can't let the small birds out in the daytime, cuz they are too dumb to do anything but huddle in the corner and let the hawk carry one of them away. The large birds hid and didn't come out for hours. (I wasn't home when it happened, but the feathers all over the lawn and missing hen kinda told the whole story)

Took advantage of this warm weather to shovel out ALL the sand and replace it. WOW, does it smell better in there. Much better, you can actually breath without lung damage.

I have a hen that thinks she wants to be broody. I would give her eggs, but she has set up housekeeping in the TOP nest box. Now what are the chances of those babies surviving? Slim? none?

Butchered 2 extra roos this weekend. Down to a mere handful now. Plan to keep the 5, they seem to be getting along.

Holidays are coming, let's hope the cold weather holds off.

If you want buff orps go to Jody at Hinkjc farms in PA. She has nice birds. If I drop the lav orps and continue with orps I will go to her for Buffs. It's a long drive but she's super nice and hers are nice sized.

There's to much competition to bother with bad people. Plus heck I give chicks away each year and older birds too. I hatch usually pure with few if any crosses. Mostly EE's as mine are good layers. Going on year three. If I do get buffs from Jody why would you buy from a hatchery?

If you read back, just had a hawk attack also.. Hawk hung around the next day waiting for lunch, but I kept the ladies and gentlemen in except for about an hour yesterday evening. Hawks are migrating now, or so I hear. =(

I have a wanna be broody now also - one gave up and another took her place, a java pullet. No one is getting any eggs lol. That said, my last broody went broody in an upper nest box. I just let her brood there, then when the chicks were all hatched placed chicks and mom on the floor. Chicks could not get up there again so mama had to stay with them.

I have had a few brood in the top nest box. I used 1/4 inch hardwire cloth to make a cover at day 20 or 21(I check everyday). So far only lost one from a top nest box.
