NY chicken lover!!!!

I haven't seen my chickens in a couple of weeks, with three more to go, I will be happy to check on them and see them for sure. DW says everyone is fine. I told her just keep them alive til I get home.

Well, those were my first chicks that I was giving to a broody, it was early, Feb., and I didn't know anyone who had BO...but probably the only real reason is the problem of getting males. The last three I got were from a wonderful person close to home, with beautiful healthy birds, totally committed to healthy bird...but she said upfront that she didn't know how to sex the chicks. So we did it together...that's how I got my pretty SS hen, a matching roo named Earl, and The handsome Reveille...they were all pretending to be girls. I wish Mama would have told me, she must have known.

Trish here (Schuylerville, work at Skidmore. You put me in touch with a friend a couple of yrs. ago who gave us 3 replacements for our last, lone girl. Except for one who turned out to be an aggressive roo, they are doing great). I have a question for you
- and any other locals you may know or who might read this-
we have a friend in Saratoga who has a hen being badly pecked. He is looking for a home for her.
If I recall, you aren't big on taking newcomers as they might bring in new/nasty who-knows-what to the flock. We have same concerns, but also can't really fit another now.
Do you know anyone around here who might be interested? i don't know the breed/age but can find out easily.

featherz, I just saw that you had a hawk attack. I'm so sorry.
As for the terrain, more hiding places make sense but I was in our pen one day a couple of years ago, that, at the time, was half covered, so the opening was only about 8' square. Our big dog was in the pen with me and a hawk dove right into the opening (girls scattered successfully) and grazed the fround, swooped up and very nearly flew into me. It was wild and scary...so they have a pretty tiny turning radius!
I'm glad at least the lost ones returned but so sorry for the one you lost.

Hi Trish! You are right, I stay away from taking in outside chickens, but I will keep my eyes peeled! I have too many chickens already even if I didn't do the bio security thing.

Standing outside with the squawky things now keeping watch for the hawks since i'll be working the rest of the week and they will have to stay in . .:-(

That broody in the top nest box that I didn't want to give eggs to this late in the season? Well, Ray collected eggs for me the past couple of days, cuz he has been home (the State owes him ooddles of time off after long stint in Emergency Command Center). I figured, "hey, he's an adult , he knows what an egg looks like", so I did NOT double check for stray eggs. Mistake on my part. I also forgot that he is afraid of the chickens. Well, not "afraid", but not willing to touch them or catch them or move them or hold them. Ok, afraid. LOL

So I go down tonight to do my thing in the coop and lift the broody wannabe and Whoa, there are THREE eggs under her. Now mind you , these are not HER eggs, cuz all three are green and hers are brown. So, I have NO idea how long they have been there, could have been 3 - 4 days....she gets her wish. To raise babies in the middle of the winter. I am NOT amused.

My Java broody is quite happy on her fake egg that I move to another box each night. I waited out two other broodies and they both gave up. /whew. I MAY hatch on NYD, but I am not setting up new waterers etc for babies in the coop. I have my nice heated dog bowls that scream 'chick drowners' and so no chicks in there! =)

nothing new going on up here... getting eggs regularly from all the girls, I noticed yesterday just how well protected they are from the cold, everyone has a new .5" or better layer of downy fluff. combs are putting off nice heat, so the fluff is doing it's "thang"...
we spent a good hour and a half outside this afternoon, it was so much nicer yesterday, 25 degrees warmer, sunny... but 40*s are tolerable. got tested by Royce for the 2nd time (ever) today. One good kick to my hand ~ it actually hurt quite a bit! ~ it took me 2 swipes to get his legs, but I got him, and this time I brought him around, upside down, and showed him to the whole flock. he did not kick me when I flipped him up into my arms... and his behavior for the rest of the time was perfect. he even came and ate from my hand.

won't get much time with the gang starting now... double shifts, Sunday and Holiday shifts... I haven't had a single day off in almost 2 months, but had a least a few short days, home at 1'ish... I think I'll be working until dirt dies. I'm grateful. I am... I'm tired.

Does anybody have decent quality bantam cochins they are selling? I was really stupid and sold my best rooster back in July and regret it. Now I'm on the search for one as nice as him or better! Here is a pic of him.
