I guess I had weird ones, but my leghorns were never flighty. They were the most friendly chickens I had and never flew anywhere.Anyone know personally of any no flighty White Egg layers.

I have had leghorns, and I know that they can fly like crazy.I guess I had weird ones, but my leghorns were never flighty. They were the most friendly chickens I had and never flew anywhere.I have california whites now, but they are too young for me to tell yet. They did manage to outfly a hawk and aren't overly friendly but they are still pullets.

When you find out, I want some as well!!! I have the Anconas. The one roo is obviously fatter than the other three, so he doesn't fly and is more friendly, although none of mine are lap pet chickens that I can just grab. The other roo and two hens roost in the barn rafters over the coop. And they haven't laid well at all, or at least where I can find them.I have had leghorns, and I know that they can fly like crazy.
My current run does not have a cover, but all my birds (Orps, Giants, Amers, BLRW) don't fly out.
I guess I am looking for a heavy set white egg layer.

LOL!!! That sounds like a good plan! Happy Birthday!musta shot sugar holes in my brain and had a moment of sheer insanity... around midnight, I ordered 15 EE (pullet) chicks to be shipped 12/3... it's my birthday present to myself.

Thanks! We are loving them.Morning all. Had to break ice off the outside waterers again. Everyone got some scratch to warm up on. The big girls are looking better (despite still molting) and didnt run away from me when I opened the door to open the pop door. Trouble is almost back to her normal, troublesome self so all is good. Butt checks show nothing and coop is still clean so I think we are in the clear. Of course, I will be nuking everything again soon just to be sure. Didnt get to bake yesterday as my dd came over and we were looking at wedding stuff. It was a fun afternoon. The mighty hunter returned emptyhanded again so he is planning his next move.
Rancher---I hope you had your tinfoil hat on before you looked at those pics!
Adorava---nice birds.
I will have some nice breeder quality roos for sale in the spring. Blue and blue/splash silkies. Since I ended up with all boys in this coop, I will grow them out as they are very nice boys. They are worth carrying over feeding for the winter.
Back to work today. Going to be a long week.
I only got to spend a few minutes with the gang today, first thing this morning... to break ice off the water and give morning greetings... by the time I got home from work, it was 6:45, pitch dark... no ranging todaybut since they have a nice old log to peck and scratch at, and leftover pumpkin to finish, and a fresh pile of leaves to kick around, I figure they kept themselves happily busy all day. got 6 out of 6 eggs as well. I went out with a flashlight to get them, and went in the enclosure to say goodnight. neither of the coops are being used for sleeping. the store bought coop is being used for laying and the apple crate coop is being explored... I can tell they've been scratching around in there, but there's really no poop inside and no body impressions in the bedding to indicate that anyone is nesting inside. the first week they started laying, they used the store bought coop, then they switched to the apple crate coop for a couple of weeks, then switched back... I don't know why they don't sleep in the apple crate coop... there are 2 nice long roosts inside, enough space for all 10 birds... but I've never removed them from wherever, and put them in there at night, so they wake up in there in the morning, maybe that's what they need? it really doesn't matter to me where they sleep, as long as they are safe and happy... it's all good to me.
half day tomorrow, and it's also my b-day... so the plan is to get home asap and spend the entire afternoon outside in the mild weather, enjoying the chickens antics
