NY chicken lover!!!!

My Alpha Roo, Randy, is missing. As are my latest chicks that hatched. I suspect that the neighbor's hawk problem has found my yard too. I am NOT amused, that rooster cost me $30. I guess it's gonna be a long winter for these birds. They won't be able to go out and range until I get home and it's almost dark at that time. Sigh. Poor birds. Poor me. (And no, I don't need another roo, I still have 3, but Randy was my lav Ameruacana, now all my ameraucana babies are gonna be splits, cuz my back up roo is black)

I feel your pain.. =( Really, I do. All my birds are confined to runs now unless I am out there working, which is only on weekends (in daylight). The hawk would not let up around here so had no choice!! =(

Hello from Syracuse!
No chickens yet, but I've caught the fever, and have it pretty bad.

I'm sure that this has been covered, but a 1400+ page thread is a little too much reading for me, so I hope no one minds if I bring this up again...

As best I can tell, technically chicken-keeping in the city of Syracuse is not allowed. Its not mentioned at all in the ordinances, but its the sort of thing that you can't do it unless they specifically say you can. However, I know that there are people keeping chickens in the city already. I've heard rumors of a rooster on the West Side and know that there are at least a couple hens in the University neighborhood... but I have yet been able to find out who my chicken-keeper neighbors are! (You guys are sneaky!)

I've gone back and forth about this, talked to friends, read the threads. I'm torn over whether I want to keep my chickens quietly or keep my chickens legally... I'd really like to pursue having the ordinances changed, but I'm worried that by raising awareness of the chicken issue I might inadvertently cause the ordinances to go in the other direction. And I don't want to do that to my fellow chicken-fans in Syracuse! I also don't want to take on the ordinance issue all by myself. (Ok maybe this specific paragraph goes in the Ordinance thread.... little OT here). Anyway my reason for coming to the NY thread is really just this: I just would like to reach out and get in touch with the chicken keepers of Syracuse, discuss my plans, etc. I'm hoping a few of them are here?

Now about those ordinances. I googled a search for Syracuse and found an article from an old Mother Earth News article and it stated that three hens were allowed.

Now as far as the University area I met a guy who has chickens. Don't know exactly where. I've heard a rooster crowing on the West side and my DB dropped off a hen that wandered into his friends yard just blocks from Downtown.

As for changing things, I suggest reading P. Formans book City Chicks. You can get a copy at the public library.

If you do decided to get chickens, make sure you're completely set up for them and they has sufficient area to roam. Get hens at first and breeds that are quiet. Some are more so than others.

I'd do it on the down low and not advertise that you have them.

I have heard of people in Syracuse who have chickens, too. My friend in the valley area tells me that her next door neighbor has them, and they free range all over my friend's yard. She didn't like that they were eating her garden plants, but she really enjoys watching them...

I agree with Rancher, stealth mode is good. Quiet hens...

Wonder if Lee's Feeds folk could shed any light?

Afternoon all. Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving. I was slinging coffee at an unnamed coffee house in an unnamed retail store this morning from 5 to 2 this afternoon. If I never see another coffee drink it will be too soon! Man were we hammered! Tomorrow I am dealing drugs so at least it will be a bit quieter (I hope). I did see a very nice 6 pointer this morning on my way to work. It was funny too because I had just been thinking about my father prior to seeing him. I guess dad is keeping an eye on me and letting me know!

Dont feel alone, those of you with hawk issues. Both the hawk and falcon are stalking my yard hoping for a free meal but I wont let anyone out unless I am out there with them. The hawk has been bold, sitting on a tree near the big run watching and doing slow, low flyovers. I like to go and annoy it by yelling and waving a rake at it, or running at it. It usually leaves because I am very good at being annoying! I feel bad for the cheeps but I will not be feeding the local predators any time soon.

Rancher is right--Stealth mode is always best. Research which breeds of hens are the quietest and make sure your coop is low profile and the coop and run are adequate for the number of hens you want.
