NYCE meet up (New York Chicken Enjoyment)

To stretch the Nutrena we mix it with scratch mixed at the feed mill. The scratch was $8 now I have no clue.

You guys still looking to get feed now that the prices have jumped?

Definitely - gotta feed them one way or another.

I always buy feed no matter what;)

How can anyone NOT buy feed? Of course I complain about the price but I won't stop buying it. If I have to switch to save a dollar I will, but I hope I'm not forced to give birds away either. You can't substitute scratch since feed is mostly corn anyhow.

I have given birds away in the past and chicks too. Their welfare comes before my heart strings.

I always give treats just cuz, but not cuz I'm "trying" to cut feed.

I'm mixing the feed with milk to cut waste. Pellets help, but the chick crumbles get wasted on the floor. So if I make a paste or wet mush nothing gets wasted. I'd rather mix up a little more mush than watch the feed hit the floor.

Lord have mercy yesterday I cleaned the grow out hoop coop and was embarrassed to see maggots. It had gotten wet from the rain and there was so much "feed dust" on the floor that there were flies. I cleaned and DE'd everywhere, then left it to dry out before adding wood shavings. It looks as though I'll need to add a new tarp for the winter. It's just the grow out hoop coop and not meant for a permanent home. I'll have to redesign it if I need to keep birds in it all year long.

I buy Nobles shavings, because they are "chunky" big flakes and less likely to get matted down.

is there a chicken food coop maybe we could join and buy larger quantities at a slight discount?

I tried to form a co op last year near me and was willing to front the cash...only 1 friend would do it with me;( it would saved me 1.50$ a bag!!! I couldnt afford to pay for all 40 bags solo and not sell off half;(

I'm willing to try if there's an interest, no clue on how to do it but it might be worth to poll for interested peeps?
