Nyjer/Thistle seed OK for Chickens????

I have a bag of Nyjer Seed or Thistle seed and was wondering if it is OK to spread in the run for them for a treat? Does anyone know if this is OK for them?

I'm not sure if the birds would find it spread on the ground, why not just put it in the feeder (or get a finch feeder for the songbirds this winter) Up here its rather pricey to use for chickenfeed....
