Hi, I am new here and have a question that may be a bit off topic. What is your preferred method of dispatching meat rabbits. I know this is a chicken forum but from lurking around I know some of you also raise rabbits. Mods, if you need to move this thread, go ahead I just didn't know where else to post it.

I've heard some folks like to break the neck. I have never tried it so can't say how effective it is. Some folks like to shoot them in the head with a small caliber weapon, very effective but I don't like to shoot close to our house.
My prefered method is to hold them up by their back feet and deliver a quick downward blow with a club between/behind the ears. Very effective and quick when delivered properly.
Almost forgot

It belongs in the other pets and livstock, I beleive. I dispatch my rabbits by telling hubby to go do it!

he puts his right thumb on the back of their head with his fingers under the jaw. holds their back legs in the left hand, and then snaps up with the left and down with the right, and snaps their neck. Its all over in a couple of seconds.

That's how i do mine also but I was wondering if anyone had better methods than I do. I also don't want to damage the heads as some locals want the heads left on. I know it's not for everyone but if it keeps them happy,I don't mind.

We hit them on the back of the head with a wooden mallet. Quick, easy, precise, bleed out through nose.

We've tried the neck snapping thing, but it never seems to work right, and you can only take so much screaming. We need to find someone local to actually show us I think.

Also tried the small caliber weapon. Didn't kill them, even at point blank range.

My name says it all, give em the ole "neckringer". I know a ole timer who prefers a hammer to the head.

I've been thinking about possibly getting into rabbits next year.
I found this on youtube. I think it's probably the quickest way I've seen.

those guys make and sell that cool tool they are using, its called the rabbit wringer.

On youtube there is another video where the guy pushes the head to the ground firmly, and just yanks on the hind legs.

Beware of the video where the two British kids blow up a dead rabbit. Its not as charming as they think it is.

I think the general consensus is that you break the neck, by pulling it away from the shoulders, or the shoulders away from it.

I got into meat rabbits last month, and am about two months away from my first kill. Wish I could be of more assistance.

I have had meat rabbits for a couple of months. I use the broom stick method. I place a broom stick on their neck and them step on it. The pull up on their legs in one quick clean motion. Then hang and bleed out. This is very dramatic at first. If you have never killed anything. But definitely gets easier. My big burly husband can't do it but some how I can with no problem.

I tried the hitting in the head and that felt too violent. I couldn't muster up the energy to hit it hard enough.

Also meat rabbits are way easier to clean the chickens!!!!!!!!

I use the broom method, too. It's quick and reliable. I agree about rabbits being much easier to clean. Personally, I think they taste a little better than chicken (hope I don't offend a bunch of people on here!).
